View Full Version : vista keeps breaking my matrix
i have a 50 GB raid0 and a 273 gb raid1 array.
xp on the 50 gb and vista on the 273 gb.
every time there is a hiccup, like having to do a hard reset....and then upon bootup, i get constant and prolonged hard drive activity and when i go to the intel matrix console, the array with vista on it is "verifying and repairing" it's happened like 3 or 4 times now...it is actually faster to reinstall vista than to wait for it to do it's repair
over 56,000 errors found and repaired and it's still at 10% complete

You've installed a different version of the Intel Storage Manger in Vista. One of the versions automatically verifies everything like that on a hard reset. You're right - it is extremely annoying. It looks like there's actually four versions out here:
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/filter_results.aspx?strTypes=all&ProductID=2101&OSFullName=Windows+Vista*+32&lang=eng&strOSs=164&submit=Go%21
I don't know anything about the two newest ones, but if you reinstall the software using the 6.2.0.2002 version (which works perfectly fine) it won't automatically verify everything like that. Or, if it does, it won't take nearly as long.
i believe i had one of the 6.2's....i'll have to play around with it more...good thing i took a ghost image

You shouldn't lose anything when you switch versions of the storage manager. Just install a different version over the top of the other one.
instead of waiting for the repairs, i just deleted that array and re-created it...next i will look to see what version i have been installing and get the other one....there was nothing important on it.

Ah, ok.
i downgraded to the version you suggested, johan and my raid1 just broke again....
i had bittorrent running and went to check out the speed guide, that in turn tried to open internet explorer to dslreports.com for a bandwidth test and that's when IE locked up, then firefox locked up. rebooted and ran the matrix console and it was verifying and repairing raid1.
i have no problems whatsoever with xp on the raid0 array.
i was thinking about just setting both seagates to raid0 and then partition it to run vista

It will verify and repair again, but it shouldn't go for nearly as long. It sounds like your system is unstable, not like your RAID array is messed up. The drive will only repair when you have a "dirty" shutdown. Is your overclock stable?
Agree with what Johan said, are you sure your rig is Orthos stable "and" passed Memtest ?
Try run at stock speed for a few days to observe if its acting up again.
To be honest, I would not downgrade a raid driver, especially as important as protecting important stuff in the Raid 1.
This reminds me of a similiar thread last year here (http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=478976) and watch for my response. :)
Anyway, you can always cancel the verification process if you want by right clicking on the raid volume.
Of course you're aware of the consequences by terminating it, aren't you ?

Remember, some see its annoying, but actually its a feature. :)
i believe i ran orthos for 12 or 14 hours...temps were 48 under load, stock vcore i believe.
the common denominator is vista on the raid1 array.
bing, in a different thread, members were talking about getting the same revision of these 7200.10's....i have a 3.aac from last year and a newer 3.aak from a couple of months ago...on the controller board of the newer one, there is a samsung memory chip, but on the older one, there is no visible memory chip...would different revisions have an impact?
edited to add: would being in an overclocked state have an effect on my ghost restore?
"Theoritically", that firmware difference should not be a problem. There are even people outthere are using totally different drives brand for raid.
Again, I suspect your OC made this weird problems, as my suggestion, run "stock" speed for few or even a week to see if the problem is gone.
