if I screw up is there anything that will remove the glue?
I'm also going by the instructions here (http://www.overclockers.com/tips693/) are there any better ideas out there?

I used glue and managed to get it unlocked after 3 tries but never removed the glue.

Next xp I unlock I am going to try white out for the trenches.
Some people say they use fingernail polish, some use thermal grease (not arctic silver thou).

Why whiteout?

Because it should be easy to remove if I need to and I already have some.
Thermal paste would be even easier to remove but what I don't like about it is it never hardens.

I used super glue and it worked great. I had a razorblade handy just to level it off. I used the rear window defogger kit, which was a pain, but it worked first try.

Same here, but with circuitwriter pen...no different though.

This is all very nice, but did unlocking your XP 1800+ do anything for you? What results are you getting. My locked XP 1800+ is running nicely at 1754 MHz and will run everything but Prime95 at 1772 MHz. The core is at 2.0V with the good Doctor's easy AK31 Pomona SMD Grabber mod.

So what I'm trying to find out is, is it worth it to unlock my XP 1800+?

So your FSB speed is about 152mhz then right? That's pretty good. I unlocked because I wanted to go higher than this using a combination of multiplier and FSB speed but I haven't done it.

What's your FSB speed? How did you go about getting it there...gradual increase?

I had already run at 154 MHz with my Athlon 1.4 GHz chip (10.5 x 154 MHz). That CPU was unlocked, so after the voltage mod, I was able to go to 1650 MHz (11 x 150 MHz) but without any significant performance gain.

When the XP arrived, I initially booted up the XP 1800+ with the FSB at 140 MHz just to make sure it was running, then upped it right to 154 MHz with CPUFSB. The core is at 2.0V after the voltage mod. With my motherboard/DDR combo, 154 MHz is as high as I can go at CAS2. I backed off to 152 MHz (actually 152.5 MHz) in order to pass the Prime95 torture test in the interest of stability.

I really don't want to bother with this unlocking nonsense without significant benefit. If I upped the multiplier to 12, I would need to get to at least 1800 MHz (12 x 150 MHz) to see any performance advantage over my current 11.5 x 152.5 MHz setting. My feeling is that the CPU is at it's limit for stable operation. I'm sure I could boot into Windows at a higher speed, but what's the point? I know it runs semi-stable at 1772 MHz, but 1754 MHz is where I can run Prime95. So post some results when you get them. Please verify that you can run Prime95 and not just get into Windows and mess around.

My 1800 bites the big one.I had trouble getting 1602 stable unless it was first thing in the morning after leaving the window open all night and freezing myself to death for about an hour of goooood OC'ing.I tried to unlock it and screwed it up like everything else I rush into.I scraped to hard to get the excess glue off by accident and did something now it doesn't work. :( I have so many projects going on though I threw it in the closet and setup my water-cooling instead.I can see metal between the L1's and the L3's where I nicked it up pretty good.

Just got a xp 1900 in today.
Unlocked it with whiteout for the trenches.
Worked 1st try. I am getting better at unlocking :)

Btw I used a toothpick to apply the unlocking material it seems easier to avoid blobs than with using a needle.

eh?

I didn't prep the cpu at all.
Just put scotch tape across the L1's leaving a gap between.
The whiteout I have has a sponge applicator just dabbed the sponge all over the gap and pulled up the tape.
The whiteout was dry in 5 mins.
The I used the stuff on the bottom of this page.
http://www.coolerguys.com/cpucool/overclock.shtml
Put just the slightest amount on the tip of the toothpick and pressed it into the L1 holes and let it dry for 10 mins then used the toothpick to connect the dots.

The whiteout is bic whiteout my wife got it at the grocery store.
