Can one re-use the boxed version of the tbird HSF? I noticed in the instructions that once you use it the special compound no longer is functional, and one is suppsed to get another HSF. Is it possible to just scrape it off and use artic silver or such?
Thanks,
Chelsea

yes, just scrape it off, clean the base with alcohol(not beer mind you rubbing alcohol:beer: ) and then put some Artic Silver or other compound on and let her rip...

Yep you can scrape it off, and reuse it. I used some adhesive remover, and it disolved and wiped right off...

Then you need some other thermal paste, like arctic silver or something else...

Here is a review of some choices...http://www.hardocp.com/reviews/cooling/compound/

although the retail HSF is probably better suited like this article (http://www.overclockers.com/articles471/) describes.

Exactly, plague.

I use mine to hold open the door on my server cube whilst burning cd's. I like them to auto-eject, but don't want the cd tray damaged. It works pretty well so far, but I am monitoring it's performance as it let me down so in the past.

Rip the fan off and use it as a nice big passive northbridge cooler :)

Most lower end heatsinks come with the TIM on the base... even some high end ones do too. Anyone who's worth their salt removes it first thing before even using the HSF. You can remove the stuff and use AS2 or other thermal grease of choice.

Thanks for all the responses. Since I have the retail version, Tbird 1.33G, will scraping the HS void the warranty if this thing fries? BTW, I got it at Fry's :)
