this should probably go in the debates but i need input on lots of intel peeps :)

me and this one guy are having a huge arguement on the heat protection of the p4 and the heat protection (or lack thereof) of the athlonxp.

he saw this article on tomshardware (cant find the url right now, ill post it when i find it) that said new motherboard will fully support the thermal diode on the athlon xp and will shut down the processor if it reaches a critical temp. (exactly like the way the p3 deals with heat).

but he insists that motherbard manufactors can implement clock throttling for the athlon xp and he says the processor doesnt have to support it.
he says that the clock throttling in the p4 is in the motherboard and not the processor. and he says that it can be added to a processor in a later stepping

but i say that its in the processor artecturature and has to be put in there when they are still designing the processor.

whos right on this?

yes you are right, the Xp protection is in the motherboard *AND* in the processor, that why it only works with XPs (apparently doesnt work too well)........The P4s clock throttling works in *ANY* motherboard like the PIIIs did......

Also, I don't know of a socket A motherboard yet that supports the onboard thermometer on the xp core. I got the Abit KR7A; brand new KT266A board and if any would have it then I figured this one would, but nope. I worried cuz of the test tom's did with the tbird, palomino, cumine and tualatin and the athlons both smoked themselves. But my hsf is bolted through the board though so it won't be coming off anytime soon. No worries.

but the clock throttling is built into the processor right? which is why it works in all motherboards.

and for it to be put into a processor does it have to be done when its still on the drawing board? or can it be implemented in processor revision?
