View Full Version : 58ppd @ 110w max, is it economically worth it to run 24/7?

I've got two of them running. Most of the time I forget about them but they are pretty responsive with Ubuntu. thanks.
It is pretty hard to put a value on the science they are doing and so I go by the points.
In my case, I am more or less at physical and cooling capacity running all mine in a single small room ... so i have retired my low producers and raised my density with fast dc and quads.
My quads consume ~200-240 W oc'ed folding smp and produce 3000-3500 ppd.
So even if you cut the smp points in half or more for bonus, they are still an order of magnitude more efficient in ppd/watt. DC's are going to be nearly as good with the c2d's and diminishes with my 930D's to ~ 60% less efficient than the quads (they consume similar power and produce 60% less).
I just retired my sig rig from folding and I am migrating to a c2d ... it was consuming ~ 175W running a single core and getting a maybe 2-300 ppd.
Now, not everyone has the means to go out and replace all their rigs with DC's or quads, but depending on what your electric costs are, it might just make sense to save the money that it costs to run a few of the least efficient rigs for a few months and put the savings towards a single more efficient rig.
At current price levels, 4mb cache c2d's (from the intel choices) are probably the best price point. If quads hit 266 in july then they will be the clear choice.

Yeah as much as I like these two Dells I'm probably going to take them off-line once their WUs complete, at least not run them 24/7 anymore.
I have a second LGA775 system all ready to go, I just need to get a CPU for it.
