This is such a n00b question but...

With any kind of waterblock (GPU and CPU and NB) do you apply thermal paste?

I have a D-tek Fuzion CPU block, ET full cover GPU block, and a Danger Den NB block.

If I do need thermal paste, which is most recommended?

THX!

They all need thermal paste.

Use Arctic Silver 5 or Arctic Silver Ceramique

Dont be harsh :(

He did say it was a total noob question.

Yeah treat it like a heatsink & fan Setup. A rice grain size in the middle of the cpu is the way i do it. But the block on turn a tad left then a tad right then tighten down. You might need to re-seat the block if your temps are not where they should be.

Well, lol, yes I was serious, but thanks to MOST of all of your responses I now the answer...the last piece of the puzzle.

I spent months researching all there is to know about water cooling, yet I never really thought more about thermal paste lol

Thanks all

ok...so you spend hundreds on Water Gear and thousand on computers, but grasp not the simplest of thermal management concepts.

How do you think a Waterblock Copper-base is different from say a Thermalright copper base?

Senator, it is abunduntly clear from your avatar that your face is completely free from Artic silver 5, or ceramique. And I doubt you properly prepared the surface of your face with isopropyl alcohol and clean white coffee filters. In fact, I would venture to say you have a poor face-mount.

Senator, I yield the floor.

Its been proven that the best paste is Coollabaratory Liquid pro followed by Shin-Etsu MicroSi MPU-3.7 and then Arctic Cooling MX-1. So either of those 3 is great. Apply it like you would on a heatsink. Small blob spread with a plastic card if your core doesn't have an IHS

WARNING: DO NOT USE COOLLABARATORY PASTE ON ALUMINIUM OR ANY COMPONENTS YOU WISH TO SWAP OUT FREQUENTLY.

Or you could use AS5 and not worry about a thing. :)

Or the 3 I mentioned because they've been proven to be better...

I'd say AS5 personaly. And as the Chinese probverb says "He who asks is a fool for five minutes. He who doesn't ask is a fool for life"

They've got that proverb posted up everywhere over our school :P Doesn't seem to reduce the number of fools though.

Ceramique is better if your sloppy supposed to be non Capicative where as the AS5 is. On a cpu with IHS I would use as5... on a GPU or chipset where its a naked core.. i would use ceramique.

Actually I will use whatever is handy in both situations, but ideally i mean :)
