i noticed various places on my mobo gets hot, like those lil sqare black (voltage transisitors i think they'er called).. would it do anything if i put some sinks on them? or would that just be a waste?
Those are your MOSFETS .. they draw heat away from your mobo....
Since I'm watercooling my northbridge, I hot glued the fan that was on it to the caps around the mosfets and they're pretty cool now. I even had enough wire to plug it in the origional place.

oh.. is there somewhere i can read about them?
i sware the ppl on my bl on aim, are usualy 80% of the ppl that first responce to every thread i might lol... (to bad they only helped a few times) j/k
well neways, if thats true then putting sinks on them would better the heat transfer process huh?
weird, my board is very oc'able and has like 20 or so of these black. flat, square chips im talking about..

A MOSFET is a
Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor, you can read more here:

over my head.. heh.. altho its nice to learn more.. thats what im hear for.. you got anymore good sites that would teach me nething about mobo/pc hardware stuff? i really wanna get into electronics and pc hardware some day if i ever get my ged...

MOSFETs are part of the voltage regulator for your Vcore. There are either 4 or 6 depending on the motherboard (6 is better). If you're running at high clocking or Vcore they can get very hot so heatsinks aren't a bad idea. I have half a pentium heatsink (without fan) on mine, you don't need anything special.

Actually they produce more heat than anything on the mobo, with the exception of the northbridge. Not exactly what I'd call drawing heat away :)

would it help my pc if i cooled them better?

It wont hurt too.
And if youve got a old heatsink you can cut up and some arctic silver epoxy then you wont loose anything if it makes no diference.
The best thing to do woul;d be to run your PC at load for 30 min or so then turn it off and feel the FETs and see if there hot. If there warm then heatsink them. If there cold dont bother.

they run hot even at idle..

I would tend to say yes, but I'm not 100% sure. If you go to radio shack, they sell small heatsinks specifically designed for MOSFETs. In my Sega Genesis, the only heatsink it has is on a MOSFET. Since the MOSFETs regulate voltage, I would say that cooling them (even passively) could lead to a more stable voltage supply, which could help you get more performance.

they are the hottest becuase they pull the heat into themselves and away from other circutry - I remeber this from when I got real heavy into Car stereo systems and high power amps... MOSFETS save you!!!!! attach some passive silver or alum heat sinks and you will be super stable!

well if i got some really small sinks, and just dapped a lil ac expoxy on it, would that work? if i could find crome color, or blue ones, that would be awesome.. i dont really want black, it would kill my whole color theme i got going

here are the ones i found @ ratshack..
big ones (http://www.radioshack.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=CTLG&category%5Fname=CTLG%5F005%5F007%5F004%5F000&product%5Fid=276%2D1368) smaller ones (http://www.radioshack.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=CTLG&category%5Fname=CTLG%5F005%5F007%5F004%5F000&product%5Fid=910%2D3242)

You could either sand and polish the RS 'sinks (they're aluminum) or you could hack up some Thermaltake ramsinks.

TT ramsinks are like 40 bucks per 8 pack.. i got 11 or so voltage reg on my board.. i dont really wanna pay 80 bucks for tin sinks and as epoxy :( ... i may get the rs ones.. i guess i could polish them or something..

Use the ones that with the heat spreaders. A set costs <$10, you get 2 of them, and each one could be used for 3-4 MOSFETs if you cut them into smaller pieces.

i got a few of those sinks around, but cutting them up would look chessey.. i want it to look all l337 and perfect =)
style is everything to me.. well with my pc neways :)
