View Full Version : Problem overclocking 7800GT
Ok, hopefully someone can help me as I'm am out of ideas. I'm trying to overclock it just to see what I can get out of it, but I can't. I try using coolbits and when I click on test it just resets it back to stock settings. I've tried Rivatuner and when I hit test it says it failed. Even if i leave it at stock settings the test still fails. I tried upping the PCI-e frequency, but that didn't help. I don't have any issues of crashing with the card...any ideas?
I've tried the latest drivers along with a few older ones to no avail. Is it possible its somehow locked in the BIOS?

Try ATItool
It works... I use to OC my 7950GT to clocks that rivatuner and coolbits will not allow to be set

i use Riva and Coolbits and Ati tool on mine
Is the fan on the card spinning ? what are your temps @ stock .
You have the PCIe power connected right ?
so @ 445/1000 it fails?
Did you get his card new ? or used does it have the stock bios on it ?
ATiTool just crashes on me, I have a Zalman VF700 on it. Bought it used and I assume its the stock BIOS on it, haven't really checked that. And yes it fails at any core/mem clock I put it at...even underclocking it.

I had a card once and would not overclock at all from the stock.. it was a Radeon 9800 pro though..turns out it was the PSU making it not overclock the cards stock speeds.. But it can't be that them OCZ EXsteams are solid PSUs.. Do you know how to flash the bios on your card?

When you open Riva what are the clocks that it is on right now ? and what is the temp like i asked above ?
I'm at work, but if I remember correctly default clocks when I open it is 450/1200 I think with temps at idle around 44C

well if that is what you have for default then that might be your prob , the 1200 part . stock should be ~ 1000 , some one might have flashed the bios @ one point .

1200 was the point where my 7800gt started to get artifacts..so try to lower it to 1150
Ok, so I got home and double checked and it was at 450/1050 (stock speeds from XFX) but get this...all of a sudden I can overclock just fine now. I didn't do anything and now it works fine....strange.

LOL that is a bit odd . How far did you make it now .
BTW there is a BIOS trick you can do to get more volts on the gfx card 1.5v =)
lol, yeah I have no explanation for it...it just suddenly worked. I got the core up to 486 and memory up to 1185 before I went to sleep. Gonna continue when I get home tonight.
what are the chances that a 7800gt will stuff up if u do the volt mod to it? i got the XFX 7800gt
