View Full Version : Overclocking of the OEM version of the Radeon 8500?
How high should I be able to overclock this thing? I've heard there is 4 ns RAM's on it, and that should only give my about 500MHz right?
Thanks.....

there is 3.6ns ram but the problem is that ATI undervolted the cards so gettting to stock speeds is tough (they rembered their mistake with the Radeon LE) so unless you flash the retail bios onto it, which lots of people have done, youre probably not getting of 275/550...

Funny,
IT is possible some Original Design Manufacturers (ODM’s) or Add-in Board (AIB) manufacturers use slower ram than the Retails 3.6ns ram(Actually I have read a few complaints about people getting 4ns Ram(as 4ns ram is functional @500mhz Thus the 250/250 setting) All the people that I know that bought a ODM white box got 3.6ns Hynix Ram.
"Q3: Does a Partner Product vary in performance and functionality to an ATI Retail Product?
A3:
Since Partner Products are based on ATI chipset technology, it is possible for Partner Products to have the same features and performance as ATI retail products. However, ATI chipsets do support a wide variety of memory configurations and display output options that allow Partner Products to also come in a multitude of performance and feature configurations. Please visit the websites of our Partner Product manufacturers for vendor specific specifications. "

Interesting, the retail 7500's come with 4ns Hynix Ram. Well at least mine did. The ram has been good all the way to 562 and it should go higher , I am guessing 570 with the right cooling. That will be a substantial increase from default of 460.
I would expect that some manufactureers would use slower ram than the retail version for cost/savings purposes.

Cisco,
Sounds like your 7500 is a screamer, heck the 4ns ram on your 7500 Oc's pretty nicely, my Gf2 Ultra with 4ns Ram maxed out @ 535-540 with 'silversinks' and the Alpha pal 15u throwing air on them.
How high can you clock your core without artifacts?
Im runnin my 8500 @ 300/300 The core will go higher as I tried 315 core (may go higher havent tried yet) but my Ram wont go much over 300 as I start to see green dots in 3Dmark2001 @ 305

LOL I forgot to mention my card is a ODM and I have not flashed this cards bios and use Powerstrip to attain the 300/300 and its perfectly stable at that speed.
I will flash the Bios later in the cards life, as I am happy running it at 300/300 Why risk flashing it?
(I did save the *Flashing File (http://www.xcl-clan.com/download.php3?id=61) to Cd-rw in case it ever disapears as ATI seems to be trying to have it removed from several sites (http://www.home.zonnet.nl/Hoek89/index.htm) that have or had it)
*The complete flashpackage for your Radeon 8500 OEM/LE and Retail cards. Inclosed alle BIOS versions in RETAIL, OEM, PAL and NTSC. Please use the loader for starting, type just in plain DOS:"start.exe". The menu does the rest and makes backup of your BIOS, verify BIOSses and flash the correct one, by just selecting the proper one! Many thanks to John Hoek, for making this possible! The program was created with the pflashrom from ATi Technologie's. All copyrights belong to them. The program was not edited, a launcher was added.
So, if it's a OEM, I'll be able to flash the bios, and use it as a retail right?
Ok, I finally got my R8500. On the RAM's it say's:
hy5dv641622at-4
Can someone tell me for sure that these are 3.6ns?
Also, where can I find drivers, and which
one is the best?
Thanks a lot! :D
I can't wait to get this installed!
BTW Can someone tell me what the defaulrt speed for bouth the Retail anf the OEM version is?
BUMP! Please help me, I really need it!

Walter,
DO NOT Try to flash that card, The few sites Ive been to have expressly written that if you have a Radeon that has 4ns ram like yours has that it should not be flashed.
I have an OEM that is an mystery as it does 300/300 without the flash and its definitly an OEM 250/250 version.
Im trying to figure out why it does 300/300 out of the box(DID this even before I added the Iu heatsink and Silversinks.
Id you go to rage3d many people have flashed thier odm/oem cards and still not getting much over 275/275
Some dont even get 275/275
But I do know for a fact that you should not flash a 4ns 8500
The minimum requirment is 3.6ns Ram to flash it.
:(

Ok, no flashing.... How do you know it's 4 ns on my card? Can you read that from the Number on the RAM's?

Yes sir,
That hy5dv641622at-4 number tells you that it is Hynix 4ns Ram
If it said 3.6 then you could flash it.
:(
Hey dont be bummed bro as 4ns ram is still rated at 500mhz and should serve you well.
If you have a multimeter you can check the Vmem setting, I am told ODM/OEM 8500's are set at 3.15 Vmem
Incredibly my ODM/OEM is 3.50 as I check with a multimeter and I am perplexed.
Macci over at Madonion who is a mad overclocker and a really nice guy is helping me figure out the deal with my 8500, he sent me this pic below:
Click this to see how you check the Vmem (http://virtual5.nebula.fi/~efidata/images/macci/ati/ramvoltage.jpg)
Sucks!
Well there is nothing I can do about it now.... I guess I'll just have to clock it as much as I can, and be happy with that.
It should be able to cover my need's for a year or so, don't ya think?
Thanks for your help Sam.
One more thing, have you fixed your problems with CS? I'm getting glitches in CS....
