Quick way to switch between 5.1 and stereo settings?

I just bought a 5.1 headphone set (Turtle Beach HPA2...pretty cool so far), and I'm looking for a quick way to switch sound settings between 5.1 and stereo. The headphones are 5.1. My speakers are stereo.

I'm hoping there is some software that allows a hotkey or perhaps a taskbar quickmenu.

it'll depend on what you're using for a soundcard. my X-fi has a pretty easy drop-down menu that I can just change when I switch from headphones to my 5.1 speakers
