I am in the market for a new video card. At the moment I am using the onboard video, Nvidia 6100. I have searched and read different areas of the forums. I am looking at either the EVGA 7900GS KO or the 7950GTKO, I would love to get a 8800GTS, but it is a bit far out of my price range. A store up teh dtreet from me, Micro Center, has teh 7950GT KO on sale for $200. I have found in different posts the 7900GS clocks very well. I will not be going DX10, as next year I will probably build a new system and get a DX10 card then. I mostly play WOW and once in a while battlefield. WOuld it be better to spend teh extra few dollars and get the 7950GT KO and Oc it a bit? I ,opstly game at 1024x768 res, but am looking to go to 1280x1024 res for now, but will be going higher in the next few months when I get my 22 inch monitor. If I am looking to go to a higher res when I get my new monitor, I am guessing teh 7950GT would be better? Any help is appreciated.

My 7900GS powers 1680x1050 wonderfully. I have it OC'd @ 630/906 but with extra cooling. If you want to save some cash, the 7900GS KO will do you just fine even at stock or slightly OC'd over the factory OC with stock cooling. You can also volt mod it to get even more out of this card.
The 7950GT is of course a better card but costs a lot more. Not sure if it's really worth the price difference since I have never used a 7950GT?

What's the price difference between the two?
A 7900gs is plenty of power for WoW and Battlefield, it's pretty much up to you if the extra speed for the future is justifies its price.

7900GS KO - $129 AMIR (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130056)
7950GT - $179 AMIR (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130074)
K currently not huge difference in price
But $50 is still $50 for something else maybe?

$50 is $50 like you said ;) These are good but not cutting-edge cards, I say just get the 7900GS and oc it til it cries. It's only real shortcoming is when you do high res plus AA *and AF, but even then it should provide playable framerates just maybe not as well in stuff like FFEAR and Oblivion.

2xAA and 4xAF is what I usually have set in games with almost max settings across the board @ 1680x1050. FEAR settings a bit less than say HL2 but still very nice and very decent framerates. Some figures I can remember from the HardWare OC Benchmarks... Max or Ultra settings.
HL2 Lost Coast = 81FPS avg
Farcry = 79FPS avg
For WoW and Battlefield a 7900GS is more than enough.
If you are going to get a 7950gt, i would get the 512mb model, not the 256mb model.
I did have a 7900GS KO before i upgraded to my current 8800gts 320mb ACS3---i had no issues with it running ET and Q4(the 2 games i play)

Well I ordered my new card today from Newegg. I went with the EVGA 7900GS KO. It was $149.99-$20 rebate, so $129.99 + $5.64 S&H. I figured I could use some of the extra money I saved towards a better cooler for it, as some of you said to put the money saved towards other things. Many of you had said it would be good and it can be OCed very well. Should have it in the next few days. Thanks for all your help.
Here is a link to the card I got. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130056

Nice choice
Just bought 2 myself for friends. One will buy another to SLI it while OC'ing them and possibly do a volt mod as well. The other friend will run one at KO stock. No matter your flavor, that is a great card! Good price too.

Well me too I just bought a Palit 7950gt 512mb for $174 (slightly used) and I think it will be a nice improvement over a crappy 8600gt... <<< weak card

I received my new 7900GS KO late in teh afternoon and installed it. After installing all teh drivers, I decided to fire up my games. I changed teh resolution to teh native 1280X1024 and cranked all teh settings to max. The result was pure visual sweetness and the movements were like liquid, no more jerkiness. In Warcraft I am getting over 60 FPS and it looks so good, it is like watching live television. It is still at teh stock clocks, so maybe in a week or two I will be Ocing it. Thankyou all for your help on this.

man I wish i could get the memory Mhz up on my 7900GS like you guys. all I can muster is 700Mhz. I got the core to 640Mhz. I vmoded the memory a little bit and got it to 750Mhz. it has the good 1.4ns memory too, oh well, I guess its something with PNY.

I am guessing w/a vmod you have good cooling? What are your temps like at load? Maybe you could get a few more clocks out of it with different cooling?
