I live in a dorm and have 2 computers hooked up on a router with a cable modem. I believe the router assigns different IP addresses for both computers. I am trying to play some on line games, me and my friend can connect to each other and play each other in a game like Unreal for instance. However we can BOTH go out and join a network game at the same time. If we each try alone, we go in fine, but we can't both do it together. any suggestions?

are you using the same games, meaning did both installs come from 1 single disk, with the same product key

if its anything like Counter Strike, then you will both have to have your own copies of the game

in counter strike, its needed so you can WON authenticate

but in counter strike, you can play LAN games just fine with one copy of the game

then, i would suggest turning off DHCP and assigning each comp a IP

it could possibly be a IP conflict, but i really don't think it is

especially if you can both surf the internet at the same time

can you?

I am sorry, I am posting htis thing for a friend of mine. He says that they can both surf the web. But it is not only the same game. Like, my friend is trying to play Everquest, and the other person is trying to play unreal, and it will crash on them.

sounds like your router is having issues. How many IP's does your cable internet ISP alow you to have? If they alow you to have more than one (I can have 3, personally), I'd lose the router and get a hub.

bad idea, don't trade a router in for a hub

it doesn't matter how many static ips the cable provider gave you

you can even have a dynamic

a router allows you to establish as many static ip's behind your router as there are ports

cable modem + HUB = Hackers dream

at least with a router, there is more than likely a firewall on it

if not, i would suggest getting one if you have to replace the router you have now

thats funny you should be able to play any game at the same time

Ive had lan parties off my router for up to 20 people on one game with just cable internet

try nother router maybe

Well, I have not been at my friends apartment to check it out. Is it possible that it can be network settings on there PC? They are both running WIN98SE. Do they need anything active? File sharing (Which I usually leave off on cable modems)? IPX? Any ideas? I can't believe that a faulty Router would cause that, but I don't have a second one to test it.

one good way to start diagnosing problems would be to disable DHCP and assign each comp a ip

it could possibly be that a certain port needs to be open

to try that way, use your dmz config and put in the ip you physically assign a comp and try it again

don't leave it on dmz longer than you have too....

because it leaves you wide open, all ports are open
