View Full Version : Best Buy says serial # is different but its not.

I bought a Nintendo DS lite on 6/11/2006 from Best buy. I also bought a PRP(Product Replacement plan). The DS worked for a few months then died , I then went as I usually to the best buy and went to exchange it. I have done this many times before, all without trouble.

Today when I went to the Best buy, the transaction was in motion when the cashier told me that the serial # on the receipt did not match the serial # on the box/ds unit. I was kinda shocked because the unit I returned today was the same exact unit I bought from the Best buy a year ago.

I talked to the manager, and he really didn't care. He kept trying to run away the entire time. He kept showing me receipts showing the same serial number as on the original receipt. I really didn't know what to say and I felt cheated. I tried my best to fight with them, but in the end there was really nothing more I could say, they even got the security guards.


I am looking for advice on what to do, I called the Best Buy corporate number and they seems to be helpful, but then sent me back to the store. What should I do? The DS I bought is the DS I returned were exactly the same. When I bought the DS, it was on launch day and there was confusion, so it is a posibility that something was switched.

Take it back w/o receit? Get store credit/replacement. Take back the new one and get your monies.

Only thing I can think of man.

I'm guessing you already spoke with the General Manager. You might try returning it to another store, the customer service reps at some stores are morons (trust me, I worked the tech bench for 2 years). If you talked to corporate and you still wanna try to do this ligit, you might try calling them and explaining to them that you are not comfortable dealing with the employees at the store and you feel they were very aggressive and treated you with disrespect. You could also contact Nintendo's support if the unit is still in manufactures warranty and see if they will give you an RMA number. If the serial number on the unit is on a sticker, and you wanna try another store, try to wear off the sticker so they can't read it very well. That's normal wear and tear, so they can't really say anything. Just some ideas though.

Trying to return it to another store will probably be your best bet. Unfortunately some people just don't care what happens or how they treat others. Make sure to explain that you got it on the release day and that there was "confusion" when you bought it. If they scanned a different DS then the one they gave you explain it to them.

Also if you normally get the service plans/ replacement plans on products make sure to tell them that. Since you had a lot of trouble at one Best Buy explain that you recently had a bad experience at another Best Buy, that should help motive them to help you.

Best Buy like most retailers is focused on keeping customer loyalty and are more likely to replace your DS if you follow some my advice and p3rnicious.

Here's the problem with BestBuy: the "Customer is Wrong" attitude flows all the way back to corporate. I've never heard of corporate service reversing a store GM's decision regarding an in-store issue.

So BB screwed up, gave you the wrong unit/reciept, and now that your trying to have them replace the item with your replacement plan you also purchased from them they basicly say screw you?

I'd suggest calling corperate, going to a different store, then if none of those work, print up a bunch of fliers with the story on it, and post 'em in your mall/around the store (but not on thier property). Nothing worse for them than bad publicity, even if they don't mind ripping off a few customers.
