View Full Version : New Ultra, Will PSU be enuff for now??
I just upgraded to a 8800 Ultra and I am running the current set up in my sig. Will my OCZ 520 with a 33amp 12v rail be sufficient enough to run my rig and Ultra without hiccups?? I wont be doin any overclocking. I ordered a PC P&C 750w quad PCI psu and a HR03 Plus from a diff retailer and it wont be here till TUES.........BUT MY CARD GOT HERE TODAY !!!! :(
Put your rig specs in here - http://www.extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp
and itl tell you matey ;)

this site tells you recomended psus for 8800 ultras .. also it seems your cpu will bottleneck it
thanks guys, and yeah I figured my cpu would kill it but money is tight. Im looking at new mb, cpu ,and ram in the fall......intel this time around. Prob a new case too.... but I figured Id get the ps and vid out of the way........I wanted to try and push the max res on my benq24 wide lcd without any issues.

That single rail OCZ 520 Adjustable will have no problem powering your AMD rig with the Ultra.
The card will be spending a lot of time in wait states waiting on the AMD CPU.

What kind of performance increase will there be until I have the chance to finish my upgrade?

The only comparison I can draw is with a modded 7900GTX. When I switched from a 3.1Ghz FX60/DFI SLI-D
test rig to a 3.9Ghz E6600/eVGA 680i test rig the the 7900 gained from 18 to 70% in the five benchmarks I run
(3DM01, 03, 05 ,06 and AM3). AquaMark 3 was the biggest gainer and 36% of the test score increase was
in the graphics cards score that came from the change in test systems.
Since an 8800GTX is a heck of a lot faster than a 7900 you would probably see even higher score difference
between the two.

If money is tight, why did you unload on a ultra? you could have saved a few hundred $'s and got a GTX, overclock it to near ultra speed, and have enough money for a better cpu and maybe motherboard.

I second what Vio1 said. Thanks for the performance comparison ViperJohn. I'm going from a 3.0Ghz Opteron 170 to a E6600 w/ 2GB DDR2 1000 and a 680i mobo myself. I got a GTS however, but I think the results would be somewhat similar. Can't wait :D

true, but I didnt want to overclock the card....It is the base ultra 621mhz, 2.16ghz and I think I got a pretty good deal on the ultra http://www.directcanada.com/products/?sku=11610BD6625&vpn=768-P2-N881-AR&manufacture=EVGA over the gtx http://www.directcanada.com/products/?sku=11610BD6548&vpn=768-P2-N831-AR&manufacture=EVGA. granted I still could have saved 100....
I guess its not too far off. I bought my gtx on ebay (brand new sealed in retail box) for $500 US shipped. It came out to $550 CDN.

You didn't get hurt. What people do not realize is a good Ultra will run far higher clocks, especially the
shader and memory clock than a good GTX will.
I have an Ultra here (mine now) that runs 756 core ROP x 1890 core shader and 1242 memory modded on
a ViperFang-IV. A modded GTX can't even come close to smelling those clocks even TEC cooled. Now this
particular card is a cut above the typical Ultra due to it's heritage but you get the idea.
