Building a new system and I have been monitoring the prices on all the hardware needed for a while now. I came across these (http://www.mwave.com/mwave/skusearch.hmx?&scriteria=BA23791) ($144.16 with S&H) and it looked like a pretty nice deal considering the 8000 version of the Ballistix (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148047) ($310) is more expensive with the same timings. Anyone have any info on this ram, have I overlooked something? What's the overclock potential? Does this seem like a pretty good deal? Thanks!

Some of the best overclocking stuff out there. Can't go wrong with 'em. I've been watching the price at mwave and it's only gone up. A few days ago these were down at $114.

First off...great ram! You haven't overlooked anything.

The non tracers (no difference between tracer and non-tracer except some bling) are currently on sale at the egg for about $130, shipped, but requires waiting for a $75 rebate. Just about a week ago they had them for about $85, shipped (after that same rebate)...now that was a deal to remember!

The price difference between the newegg and the Mwave is not much and you don't have to wait for the rebate, so you did just fine. Why the egg has the 8000s for such a high price is beyond me and makes no sense when places like Mwave have the 8000s for under $130. I can only assume that they have much more of the PC8500 stock to get rid of so they are pricing the 8000s high in order to encourage buyers towards the 8500s.

The overclock potential of these is huge! There have been regular reports of clocks near and beyond 700 MHz (DDR1400) with these modules. Hitting 600 MHz is just about a given.

Here are some links...caution, they will cause you to salivate.

General results:

Excess of 700 with 4 gigs:

My sets are still sitting in their box, unopened, waiting for a mobo to arrive any day now (unfortunately, none are from the 1117M.P5 batch).

Yeah I paid $170 for mine and they dropped the price $40 the week after I got mine. :(
Back in April I think.
Good stuff.:D

Yeah, I've been eyeing those 8000s also...just for comparison purposes and I guess I waited too long.

Seeing lots of reports of prices climbing back up on DDR2. :(

Glad to hear the good reviews. I've been eying hardware and prices for the past 6 months now, and It's nice to actually start purchasing some things and putting this computer together. Sucks having to wait so long, but with price cuts (on cpu's on 7/22, and possibly 8800 GPU's) in the near future theres no justification for getting anxious and purchasing all my hardware right now. Wish I could have jumped on this memory when it was cheaper...but I'm still getting a pretty good deal considering prices are rising and I WAS going to spend $60 more for a slower module the day before.

Thanks Madman,
You sure did tell me. Yes, all crucial. I suppose since they are both at the same address here that the next 3 will go through soon (from the same merchants). Funny thing is the $55 one showed nothing this morning and suddenly later today goes all the way to the last step already showing a check mailing date. I sent the $55 one just 12 days ago.

is the mwave price on the ballistix 8000s before or after rebate?if its before the $40 rebate that is a wicked deal.

kimochii72

B4 the rebate. But you'll have to pay some $8 for shipping making it about $96 after rebate.

Buy 2 kits and shipping drops to less than $5 per kit. :D

The way I see it, if you had asked me, back in Jan of this year, if I was interested in buying a 2 gig kit of well-binned Micron based DDR2-1000 ram for under $50 a gig, I would have first asked you if there was any chance that the theft could be traced.

Whether it is $88, $96, $115, $125 or even $145, these are all great buys on 2 gigs or ram and we will all look back some day soon and start rambling about the "good ole days". Just ask the guys that bought these kits of Micron based ram last fall for $350 plus what they think of these prices.

Ha ha, me too. And possibly bought by an identity thief too.
I'm just wondering exactly what I can sell these sticks for in 1 year from now. I'm hoping something like this:

Tracer 8500 $160
Ballistix 8500 $150
Ballistix 8000 ~$150
Ballistix 6400 ~$100

What do some of you speculate?

I hope my investment pays off, I spend countless nights this past 6 weeks deal hunting. I think this one here might be my last grab this week. I just hope the price of 2 gigabyte sticks (2 x 2g) down drive down the price by then.

That's not funny considering I bought my Ballistix 8000 for $275 after rebates last year. I am considering on upgrading to 8500 for that price and maybe even to 4 gigs. They are some of the best RAM as far as I am concerned and I have never had issues with mine except for the price I paid for them. :bang head

I plan to get the P5K Deluxe and the E6850 and maybe the TR 120 Extreme or a cooler thereabouts.

I have 2 questions:

#1. Can I even OC the above system I plan to buy to 500 FSB on air?

#2. At 500 FSB, will the Ballistix 1000 be faster than the 800 even though the 1000 is CAS5 ?

#3. If I OC at 400 FSB, and don't go to 500, will the 800 be faster than the 1000 ?

I'm confused on how the timings come in to play when OC'ing. I know about FSB OC'ing and 1:1 ratio, I'm good there.

Not sure to take the Newegg $70 after $45 MIR 800 deal, or the mwave deal. Ah, I don't even have a system to test this type of memory yet and mwave has a 7 day return policy on their memory (newegg has 30).

Reefa_Madness

The timings on the 8000s can be tightened up to equal the 6400s if needed, but they should have a little more headroom than the 6400s.

As the clock speed increases, an Intel rig gets increased performance from the additional bandwidth, as well as the memory latencies are better because even though timings may be "looser", the increase in clock speed offsets it.

Yeah, I just want to be for certain that the RAM I buy will be fine with my mobo. Im sure after I update the bios, everything would be fine. The ballistix sound very nice, and great for overclocking.

Hmmmmm I wondered why he looked so devious....Whats funny is...I work for UPS...so I could hold a grudge on him!!! J/K of course. I don't have any pride in my company or care who they are competing with.

Just curious, but have you gotten any info on your missing sticks?

Sure hope that you have followed up with FedEx and/or Mwave.

Yes of course...I had Mwave on the phone within 5 minutes of realizing my sticks were gone. The person I talked to was very cooperative (although hard to understand) and got me two new sticks ordered right away. They filed something with Fedex and I'm suppose to be giving a FedEx guy the box which was suppose to contain my original sticks in it for them to "investigate". But yea...there was no way I was just going to let two sticks of RAM go missing. Still kinda upset that I have to wait until next week to get them, but working for UPS, I understand things like this happen from time to time. When the packages come down the belts in the warehouse they often times get jammed and crushed my larger packages. The box I recieved looked very familiar, in that it was obviously opened and retaped so the memory must have fallen out.

Yea... I was dissapointed not to see them in there. I was really wanting to test them out (even though I'd be testing on an Athlon 3000+ until I can upgrade on the 22nd)! Bah...I guess next Tuesday isn't THAT far away. Anyways...what kind of system are you putting those bad boys into?

God I would have been to. Yeah hopefully this time, things work out.

An Asus M2N-32 SLI Deluxe Wifi Edition
Asus EN 8600 GT Silent Geforce 8600 GT in SLI (for now)
AMD Athlon 64x2 4600 + (65w) Windsor 2.4 GHz
Corsair 620 HX power supply
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320 GB HD

...Not the best system. But Ill be upgrading time to time. If I get this new job, I wont have any problem upgrading my system. :santa:
