View Full Version : Will this improve my accuracy in CS:S?

I currently have a Logitech MX1000 laser mouse and a very fine thing it is too but im starting to think i may need a higher dpi gaming mouse as i find it a pain in the ass having to move the mouse 2-3 inches to cover full x/y axis.
Will a higher dpi mouse enable me (say 2000dpi) to cover the width of my pc screen in a 1inch or less movement @ 1280x1024 or am i barking up the wrong tree?
i dont know i always did fine with a regular optical mouse, it just takes skill.
Just turn your in-game sensitivity up. That'll help.

IMO, if you want to improve your aim, you should start using lower sensitivity. i can't even make a full 180 degree turn in the width of my mouse pad (probably about 1 foot wide), but i have gotten really fast at making a couple of quick swipes. its a trade off, but i think it is totally worth it.
i use a g5 now, but i liked my mx518 better. on the g5, you can crank up the dpi really high, but it just makes the mouse way to sensitive for me to actually use, so i normally play at just 800dpi (the same dpi of my beloved mx519 R.I.P.)
bottom line is, if you feel you need a more sensitive mouse, the g5 will do what you want, but i think you are barking up the wrong tree, if better aim is the goal. ;)

I have a microsoft Habu, and use the mouse at 2000 dpi, but have my sensitivity set very low in windows, and very low in game (less then 2.0). That way, it gives me the extreme precision of high dpi, and makes it easy to line up those fine long distance headshots.
A very twitchy mouse makes it difficult to hone in on peoples heads. When i lowered my in game sensitivity, my headshots went way up.
Its more practice than mouse. I know someone who had a terrible computer and a ball mouse who went to CAL-P using it because he couldnt afford anything else but got so good playing with it.
There is no key to improve accuracy, you either learn it or you dont. It can't be taught or purchased.

My aim is pretty good already i just dont like double swiping or large movemnts. i have a very slight mouse movement and often miss the shot or get pwned while double swiping to reach far corner of the screen, thinking about getting a Razer or saitek 1600dpi twice the dpi of my trusty logitech which i will keep for web browsing etc. Is the g7 worth the extra money over the g5 too btw?

depends. they are the same mouse just the g5 is wired and g7 is wireless. to me wireless is a must as corded mice make me want break them.

I user a razer copperhead. I noticed a huge improvement. Hard to not use it now. woot.com sells razer products on sale now and then. Wait for a razer woot if you ask me. You can get them 1/2 off or more.

I use a reasonable high-sens (MX518, 1600dpi, 5.0 Sens in CS and CS:S, medium-high in windows, no accel in windows or CS). I find I do just fine with such. I make little movements but can control my mouse decently. I was dominating CS:S in a DM server last night, in fact :)
It's all practice. Though a mouse with a more accurate sensor is always better.
Make sure to have a good mousing surface too. I can't stress how much a good surface is. For instance, my friend has a decent optical mouse (My Old intellimouse explorer... was a great mouse), but he has no mousepad, and when the mouse is rested on his table for more than a half second, it gets stuck and needs considerable force to get the mouse to start moving again. I always find myself getting completely thrashed when playing at his house for the sole reason that I can't aim properly.

It all takes skill not just your mouse.. I use a Microsoft Optical Mouse 2 with the DPI default and do fine
Don't buy into the gimmick that a new "gaming" mouse will make you any better. It just depends on what you get used to. If you want better accuracy, just turn your crosshair to 'small' and your in-game resolution to 800x600.

if you want you can crank up the sensitiviy really high on the MX1000 so that it is rediculously sensitive, but personally i just lowered mine by 50% last month and it helped my aim a ton

QFT, 800X600 and CS/CSS were meant to be.

I recall reading an in depth review of every single gaming mouse and most of them were the same except those new fancy laser mouses which apparently have a freakout range when you twitch the mouse a little too quick.
To train aim just load up some fy_iceworld and throw 31 bots on the other team, give 'em knives and make sure every shot is a headshot.

^^true, i just started playing widescreen, in a window on my 21 inch crt. i don't think i can go back to not having that extra fov.

Have you used a G7? If not, you gotta check it out. This thing is a work of art. Been playing CS for the better part of the decade and I can safely say this has been the best mouse of them all.

Some good habits
1) Always hold your crosshair at head level, aim about 1/2" from corners. . . this way if someone pops out, you just pull the trigger. I have been banned for wallhacks for how often i do this
2) Walk, and listen for footsteps.
3) Look for shadows on the ground around corners. Sometimes shadows will even "bleed" through the thinner walls and doors
4) If watching a door, pay attention to the knob. When you see it turn, fire a few shots through the door at head level. Will at least make them think twice about coming through.
5) DONT SPRAY, take the extra 1/2 second to line up at the head. Especially with the ak. Learn how to fire 3-5 shot bursts. Stand some distance from a wall, and fire a few clips at it, paying attention to the recoil. Learn how to move your mouse down while firing.
Practicing against bots isnt really all that helpful. Bots stand still alot, and move very predictably. Humans dont. I have a very good CSS public server that gets quite a bit of very good players on. Hop on and play sometime, and if you can do well against some of the regulars, you can do good against almost anyone.

My in game name is ]ES[ Bullets. I'm the jerk head admin on the server that hands out headshots like candy in a parade:D
Seriously though, hop on, and if you see me, get my attention, and I'll play with you, see if I can give you any pointers while in game. I'm off work tomorrow, so you can probably expect to see me on quite a bit (while i'm not playing DiRT)

AFAIK you shouldn't adjust the windows mouse sensitivity if you game, apparently it reduces precision. There was a CPL mouse sensitivity guide floating around a while ago which suggested that you should only ever adjust the game settings.

You really dont have an option with not setting the pointer speed in windows, I just have my pointer speed set very low. That itself isnt harmful. What throws me off is if I have "Enhance Pointer Precision" enabled, and mouse acceleration on. The pointer precision seems to add a little lag, maybe due to extra interpolation, and the acceleration makes the pointer speed up in a non-linear fashion. At least that is the way it seems to me.
All my mouse settings I manage through the Habu drivers (which are great). A little bonus is you can independently adjust vertical and horizontal sensitivity. I have lowered my vertical sensitivity, so the crosshair moves less up and down while I spin, so it helps me stay head level.

The new Razer Deathadder wasn't out when they did this, but I think in a later review they rated it close to the top.

The only time resolution changes the field of view is when you go from a normal resolution to widescreen. You still see all the same things on 800x600 as you do on 1280x1024.

And on 1280x1024 and above you don't get to see some of the extra special eye candy like jagged edges and blocky textures!

Dude i started out as a sniper on CS with a ball mouse. A good sniper has very little to do with his mouse, and alot to do with practice.
I currently run the MX518 and the MX1000, both of which are perfect for such a game. I would recomend adjusting your ingame sensitivity.

BTW, for those with mouse acceleration, TURN IT OFF.
I have a little program that disables mouse acceleration permanently. It modifies Win32k.sys I believe. It disables it so you cannot re-enable it.

No viruses or such, it's a legitimate program.
I also have my USB Polling rate at 1kHz, but I haven't noticed any difference with that turned up.

I used an Intellimouse Optical for 6 years straight. I won trophiesand prizes with it at LAN parties, and smashed it into my table countless times in fits of childish rage.
I watched people with new fancy gaming mice fail and fail again. My modest system with my modest mose came out on top. I found what was comfortable to me and practiced with it. My keyboard is ancient and came with my old athlon 2000+, its worn smooth on all the keys I use.
Practice is whats going to make you better, and thats a fact.
Also, I replaced my old mouse yesterday with an Intellimouse 3.0. Since my Optical lasted my so long and did so well for me, I decided to get the closest I could to it, the 3.0. Its taking some getting use to, but I do like it a lot!
In short, My Vote is for an Intellimouse 3.0!
^Same here Wraith. I find it sad to see many of people go and blow 70 ~ 100+$ on a 'gaming' mouse because they think it makes them play better. At LAN parties after beating up on people in CSS or whatever they'd come over and 'spectate' and laugh at me for the mouse I used when I was the one whopping their azz. I've never disabled or enabled acceleration in windows using that slider or whatever, I just turn my sensitivity to what I'm comfortable with and play.

For those of you that are saying the gaming mouses have nothing to offer, you should try one first. The buttons and scroll-wheels on Razer mouses are far superior to Microsoft (Intellimouse 3.0, 1.1), and they also don't have problems with negative acceleration or skipping when movements are done too quickly. The gaming mouses from Razer also offer higher USB hz and DPI which overall means the mouse will be tracking more movements and will be much smoother overall.
Currently I'm using an Intellimouse 3.0, but I'd rather go back to a Copperhead as it's just a smoother experience. The only problem with the Razer mouses is that you'll need a good mousepad for them to work well, and they're known to have cable issues. (because they make them thin)
The best way to pick a mouse is to go to a local store, and try them out. The shape is probably the most important, so make sure you're comfortable with whatever mouse you choose.
Mouses I would recommend:
Razer Copperhead
Razer Diamondback (I prefer the Copperhead shape)
Razer Deathadder
Intellimouse 1.1
Intellimouse 3.0
Mouse pads I would recommend:
Steelseries (Any, but make sure it works well with your mouse choice)
Everglide (Fnatic Titan is great)
Icemat
Razer (Not bad, but I'd go with one of the above first)
Sensitivity doesn't matter really, as long as your comfortable. The only thing I would advise is to make sure you can do a 180 turn easily, it's crucial for general movement ability.
For acceleration issues, I reccomend you remove it, uncheck "enhanced pointer precision" and also there are various fixes for games. Some like the CPL mouse fix, but I use the -noforcemparms -noforcemaccel launch options for Counter-Strike.
And on 1280x1024 and above you don't get to see some of the extra special eye candy like jagged edges and blocky textures! You also don't get to see good refresh rates or all of your frames!
Stick with 1024x768 or lower, I use 800x600, and make sure to set your refresh rate to around 100. (-freq 100 launch options)
For those of you that are saying the gaming mouses have nothing to offer, you should try one first.
I didnt mean then had nothing to offer, I mean to say having a mouse your comfortable with and practice with is more important than a few extra dpi an what not.
I tried all of the mice you listed at best buy the other day, and I like them all. The fact that my Intellimouse Optical did so well for me for so long made me get the 3.0!
How good is CS:S compared to original CS (besides graphics being better) ?
Still load of cheaters out there and punkbuster doesn't work , stuff like that ?
I loved CS until it became littered with cheaters and all later on.
play in leagues and people don't cheat (especially cevo)
Overall, there's probably more cheaters in source in general, because it's newer. For the same reason, more experienced players probably still play 1.6, and newcomers play source
icantfindone
06-26-07, 11:43 PM
Just find some well admined servers, and cheaters will be rare. I ban several a week from my server, and have quite a few regulars who often send me demos/steam id's of cheater to be banned.
As far as ingame resolution goes, as long as your minimum FPS stays above 60, you wont have any problems. I have played with a custom config written to boost FPS, and I averaged about 240 FPS at 800x600. I now play at 1600x1200 with all sorts of eye candy enabled, and enjoy the game more, and still average 160-200 FPS, and never see it dip below 80 FPS. At a certain point, you become CPU limited, and lowering quality just makes the game look worse with no performance boost. If your rig can handle it, enjoy it. I do.

i'm playing css with a cheap wireless logitech mouse and i've got to say that i'm pretty sure that i'd have to get a LOT better for a mouse's infinitely small reaction times to actually make a difference; in fact i've used fancy mice and i still sucked :) lol ; i think the most important thing in a mouse is that it is comfortable and slides well (but not too slick, just an even, controlled glide, which is more to do with your surface anyway)

While I'm all for doing well at online games I can't imagine sacrificing eye candy (one of the main reasons why I play PC games) for a slight increase in the number of frags I get. I never play below 1600x1200, and I always do well enough to enjoy myself.
