How high an overclock should I be able to get out of the E6600 with the stock heatsink and fan?
Depends on the ambient temps. You can probably go to 3.0 GHz in a 23 degree C room without pushing over 70 degree cpu temp. Anandtech shows the stock HSF reaches 71 C @ 3.73 GHz but that's not with a folding load. You might try to hit the 400 x 8 sweet spot (for motherboards that change to the 1333 strapping @ 401 MHz) if you can run ram at 1:1 at that FSB. If you have 1000 MHz ram, go for a 4:5 ram multiplier @ 400 x 8. Just monitor the temps closely. If you get a chip that OCs well on relatively low voltage, you'll probably be OK to 3.2 GHz. Again, with the stock HSF, ambient temp and case cooling is key.
You can also get a bit more out of the stock hsf is you add a helper fan to it.
If caseless, it is pretty easy ... just lay another fan on top of it. Is is harder to do in a case but if there is a vent on the side over the cpu, you can add a fan to it and possibly some ducting to bring it close to the intel hsf. Or just strap another fan on to it. Heat build up in cases also needs more airflow.
I have run a c1 930 at > 3.75 ghz at 1.35v by laying an extra ~100 cfm fan on it.

Thanks, guys. The multiplier on these boards is locked at 9. So, I have set the fsb to 290 for 2.62 ghz. Not a major overclock, but it helps.
pete, I need to post a pic of the hole I cut in my case. I used to have one of those big fans on it until it wore out. You know, the round ones.

Thanks, guys. The multiplier on these boards is locked at 9.That is what the CPU is locked at

Yeah, but at least you can move it down to test max FSB a bit easier than in the past.
What mobo is it on? It should be able to take a drop in memory speed one notch...and then up the clock to 2.88ghz or so such that the memory operates at the popper speed again. It seems to be my sweet spot (without pushing memory) until i get to 3.4 or 3.6.

ECS PT890T-A
I'm using 1 stick of 1 gig DDR2 - 800. The board only requires DDR2 - 400.

Oooohh, I have no experience with ECS products (i think). I couldn't say how well they OC or how to get them there.

Well, how do you unlock it? Can't you just change it thru the bios on some boards?

Well, how do you unlock it? Can't you just change it thru the bios on some boards?Nope, they cut the bridges inside the CPU to limit the multiplier. There is no way around it unless you have the stuff to make the processor
Probably some confusion where one of you guys think it can go over... It's from 6-9 multi.

Can't you lower the multiplier and raise the FSB? Just not on my board?

Can't you lower the multiplier and raise the FSB? Just not on my board?Yes, you can lower it to 6.

Well, like I said, "The multiplier on these boards is locked at 9." ;)

Well, like I said, "The multiplier on these boards is locked at 9." ;)Yeah you can't change the multiplier if the BIOS doesn't have that option.
You might be able to find a clockgen version that will.

"Slightly" younger? Way younger.
I've watched Family Guy, but I don't remember that.
But, either way, it's got to have a meaning. What is it?

I don't see how "touche'" is appropriate in this situation.
Perhaps you can explain that to me.

Um, its kind of a classic quote amoung a lot of my friends, I suppose I incorrectly assumed that its use was a bit more wide spread.
Bassicaly its times like this I will go to urban dictionary to defend my use of odd ball comments and phrases. UD Link (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=touche+salesman)
It was a nice was of saying you were right, and that the way you expressed it did a great job of explaining the spot you may be in, and therefore the way you put forward some of his statements which may have been a bit confusing at first, but are now clarified.

But, you quoted Audioaficionado, not me.

LOL!!!
Then I apologize for getting so confused. Oopps.
But the important bit, is do you better understand the use of that Family Guy quote now?

Touche' Salesman...
Ok, can't let this one go...
Touche means you have made a good point in a discussion and a point that effectively counters a previous point that looked good at the time.
Who ever wrote in the Urban Dictionary has the idea wrong; the joy of the net!

Whole Quote:
"Touche' Salesman.......... I to have an uncle." -- in reference to the insurance salesman IF I am remembering correctly.
Please don't forget the context. :)
Oh come on man... You're forgetting half the phrase. And the urban dictionary thing is in reference to the family guy quote. And do not get me started on the fact that Urban Dictionary is decidedly not the place for the official definitions and the grammatically correct to try and correct people on proper usage of a phrase. If you want to do that, and I wanted to prove my point, I would tell you to search for "meat" or "pregnant" on that web site and see what comes up.
But lets drop this please? And perhaps accept that people quote things to help articulate their thoughts, weather or not the thing they are quoting is correct in grammar and usage. Please, lets forget about this before I have to quote someone with a "Thats what she said!"
