View Full Version : Crucial Ballistix DDR2 PC-800 or PC2-1000 ?
Crucial's DDR2 PC2-800 has CAS 4.
PC2-1000 is CAS 5.
What I plan to do with my system is OC my E6850 chip to,hopefully at least 400 FSB.
I'd like to do 500 FSB on air if possible, with a P5K Deluxe or GA-P35-DS3R.
What I'm trying to find out and further understand is which of these DDR2's is going to be faster?
I can get the PC2-1000 at mwave for like $90 per 2gb kit (2 kits per household) after rebate.
The PC2-800 I can get at Newegg for $70 after $45 rebate (1 kit per household).
Can anyone offer advice as to which way to go ?
Both are pretty much the same thing. Although the DDR2-1000 set may clock better. I have no problem running 500mhz and beyond even at 4-4-4-12.

One might go so far as saying that they may be using the same chips. It is a crap shot anyways.
I would buy the DDR2-1000 if it wasn't that much more expensive.
Either are good choices.
Yeah both should have D9GMH chips. However, the DDR2-1000 would probably get a higher binned set than the 800s but you never know. Regardless all of these Crucial modules have been doing a hell of a job.
I can get:
4gb's of the 1000 at mwave for $180 (includes $8 S&H - that's two 2x1gb kits at $88 per kit after $40 MIR, 2 kits max per household for rebate)
or
4 gb's of PC2-800 at the egg for $185 ($70 after $45 MIR, 1 kit rebate per household).
Go for the 1000 ?
Since I don't have my system built yet (waiting for the E6850) should I just buy 4 gigs now and hope they work? lol
I hate to miss these deals.
I have no idea what "binning" means :-/
I'd go for the 1000s for sure.

Crucial has some of the best customer service & support there is.
Even if they didn't work (highly unlikely) you wouldn't have a problem with a RMA from Crucial.

Ask Gautam what he thinks about those 8000s.
I'll tell you...he loves them!
Get the 1000s and don't even bother to ask anyone else...just get them before they sell out.
And yes, over the GEILs that gigabit posted about. The Ballistix 8000s and 8500s have been clocking like mad all over the place.
Can someone answer me this:
The Crucial 800's have CAS 4. The 1000's = CAS 5.
I plan to OC my E6420 to 3.2ghz at 400 FSB and 1:1. I know the 800's can do that, so can the 1000's.
But because the 1000's have CAS 5 aren't they slower?
Can someone explain in layman's terms how the timings work I have a hard time wrapping my head around this.:bang head
The 1000s will do it at CAS4 no problem. There really isn't that much of a difference between CAS4 and CAS5 on the C2D platform. Here is a thread that may be of help. I didn't get around to running the 3D stuff cause I'm having some problems with the 7x multi.

If you run the 400 fsb that you are looking to do, the 1000s at 400fsb if set to spd will default to 4,4,4 &12.
They will only start going towards 5 when you crank them,
Mine at 475 run @ 4.5 didn't take good notes at that setting, so I'm not sure what the rest of the timings were.

It does a good job. Hope it helps.
I just bought some of the Ballstix 1066 kits. No problems at 2.1V with 950Mhz and 4-4-4-8.
Neither my Corsair 8500C5's or Patriot 1066's would do this and both had Micron's. The Corsairs are D9GMH and the Patriot are D9GCT. These Ballstix are D9GHM as well.
They cost me $180.00 (Canadian) tax included on special at NCIX.
I paid over 500.00 for the Corsairs when new :( and 250.00 for the Patriots when new. Rams dropping like crazy.
Wonder when it will begin to rise again...
Well I went with 4gb's of the Ballistix 800's at the egg. Being a first time OC'er, and as long as I can get my E6420 to 3/3.2ghz on 400 FSB I'll be a hampy camper (hopefully I get a decent batch).
