Well, i like hosting a home cs server for friends a long with vent and such.
And prioritise my upload speed..I currently have cox communication premiere package which is 12-15mbps down and 1mb up. Ive seen people with much slower download yet 2mpbs or more upload.
Im paying 57 dollars.
What internet server should i order that will be less with a higher upload? Cox is cable. I would like atleast a stable 1.5up, anything 2 or higher down is fine for me.
Thanks guys, will be changing soon.

i have verizon fios's midle package 15/2mbit.... i run 2 counter strike servers, a web server, and ftp... and i almost always have over 1mbit of upload bandwidth left to play with.
Its really all about setting up the server my cs servers ( 18 and 16 person servers) only use 300kbit a piece which leaves 1400kbit for everyone else on the network... of which about 400kbit goes to my web server every now and then, and then me for BF2 and other games, then parents.
so what im trying to say is that i run 2 cs servers (both of which are full almost 24/7) as well as a web server (php, mysql...) for psychostats for thoes cs servers as well as HTTP download for cs servers and i only use about 1mbit of upload max... more like 600-700Kbit avg.
To be honest i dont see where your having a problem i ust to have adel cable with 256Kbit upload, and i ran a 12 person cs server and still had nuf upload bandwidht left to play bf2 while the cs server was full and parents browsing the net and doing email...
I have a question about the cs server... have you ever set any of the rates on it? how many players is it?
Cus theres a lil formula to calculate some rates for the server so it doesnt chew through bandwidth.
The rate vars on a CS 1.6 server are
sv_maxrate
sv_maxupdaterate
sv_minrate
Now sv_minrate should be set to 0... cus people with crappy net dont lag a server a server with crappy settings and net make a laggy server
Now for the sv_maxrate formula
(ammount of bandwidth in kbit/s) x 128 / (number of players in sevrer)
So if i have a 12 person server and want to use 300 kilobits of upload then
300 x 128 / 12 = 3200. So sv_maxrate = 3200
sv_maxupdaterate = sv_maxrate / 256
so for the same server it would be
3200 / 256 = 12.5 or 12 (dont use decimals and round down)
this will ensure a nice lag free server from the point of not using to much net.
In general, it costs alot more for a higher upload than for a respective download rate. Asymmetric DSL (usually sold as business, even though businesses generally don't need the upload either) costs 2-3x more then home DSL that has a higher download rate. It's also why T1 still costs a lot, even though down rate speed wise, it has been surpassed.

Alright
And yes I have, at 10000 im suposed to be able to run about 18 ppl which is whatit says on the steam forums. Ive had 12 people in my server at 10k before and my pinghightened. My rate was at 30000 tough (was playing a scrim..) i usually force the rates to 10 k and 60 up/dwn for a 66 tick server.
I hihglt doubt you could host 12 people on a 256bit connection, you might et like 6? your rate would have to be like 5000 or something.
Well, i try to run a vent at the same time i do a server. And im sure i cant host a 30k rate 11 person scrim server. Thats the same as 30 at 10k.
How many people *should I be able to run? This is source also, ive heard it uses a little bit more bandwdith, but with set rates i wouldnt think they differ.

no no no... you got it bass ackwards man. sv_maxrate doesnt determine the ammount of people a server can run it determines the ammount of bandwidht usage.
if you have a 1mbit upload i would say only use about 450kbps for your cs server max so you have the rest for vent and what not... this would mean for a 18person server
450 x 128 / 18 = 3200... set your sv_maxrate to 3200
then sv_maxupdaterate to 12
and i guarentee you will not have any lag problems with your cs server hoggin the net.
this is how i have always setup my cs servers and never had any problems... and yes i had absolutly no game play problems with a 256kbit connection and a full 12 person server
i think you should read up on this

Well, yes it does.
Using more bandwidth will limit h ow many people you can host because itll use all f yur bandwidth sooner.
I could host 10 people at 30k, or 30 at 10k.
An update rate of 12 would be horrid reg, thats like playing at 12 fps lol
Most users dont realise even 60 is almost overkill for a pub. They see its at 12 well..a full 33tick server would own 12.
with an update/cmdrate of 12 thatt would make 33tick overkill. The server can only take use of what it send a recieves, even if a erson has their cmd rate 30, if their only getting 12 thats 18 unused packets i believe.
laying smoothly at 12 fps, haha.

READ that ENTIRE post over at steam powered
take what you want but i have been hosting cs servers and setting up MULTIPLE cs servers for clients (im talking 30 + cs servers) for 5+ yrs using my formulas and all of them are smooth gameplay and lag free servers. But w/e spend more money on internet just to have it get runover by your lack of listening on how to set up a server.
btw sv_maxupdaterate and sys_ticrate (tick) are 2 VERY different things. my current cs server runs at 500fps sys_ticrate.

Yes they are, but their both needed to run together to take advantage of eachother
I know how to host a server, thankyou.

ok w/e you say man. i just think you shouldnt be looking for faster internet but how to more efficiently use your current internet. but hey if you have money to blow go for it... why not just get a dedicated t3 45mbit line to your house?

Because that wouldn't be practical ⌐_⌐
Im just saying an updaterate of 12 is horrible and registration would suck..well..bawls.
Can you check how many people i can host with a cmd/update rate of 30 and a rate of 10000?
Thankya.

with a 1mbit connection.... 12 people and that would max out your connection
1000 x 128 / X = 10000
1000 x 128 = 10000x
128000 / 10000 = 12.8 so rounded down to 12 people.
i assure you that an update rate of 12 or 30 you will not tell the difference.
