juz finished putting together my new system - haven't even overclocked it yet...............but when i go to shut down it wont turn off - however, it goes far enough so that when i manually shut it down, it doesn't have to go through scandisk when starting back up...........it is my first AMD system in a while (and she's fast)..............

I've had this same problems with Win98SE. Where occasionally it would not shutdown and power off all the way. It would sit on the "Windows is shutting down" or something like that splash screen. I've never figured out what it is, but it's definitely software and NOT hardware. I just re-install Windows and the problem goes away. I think some drivers or something got corrupted. I never knew how to fix or what to fix.

I had the same problem with WinME on occasion, and the wierdest was if I restarted, my master Hdd wouldn't detect, it would just click. but if I shut down and turn it back on it was fine.

I never figured out what the prob. was but it quit after going to XP.

That is a Windows 98 shut down problem. You'll need to go to the Windows Update and get the shutdown supplement.

Since you just put this system together there are two other possibilities:

Are you sure that you got an ATX case? If its not an ATX case it wont do the automatic shutdown.

Are you sure you plugged the right cable into the right place on the motherboard?

Not trying to be condesending but these are prerequisites for the automatic shutdown to work.

If your hard drive is 40G or over, you'll need the large hard drive cache support, in addition to the regular supplements.

thanx for the suggestions so far - and 1) yes, cables are in the right place (third computer i've built so far and i do read the instructions, hehe)..........2)harddrives are 15gig(6/9 partition) and 20gig (6/14 partition).........3) it is an ATX case and is AMD-certified................have had windows ME but since i built the new system, decided not to go back.............however, it did shut down proper for the first couple of days - it just won't now...........

My Soundblaster card use to do that to my system. I removed it and the system shut down.
