Guys,

A bit of advise for a hardware newbie, I recently bought the above chip and am keen to know what the normal operating temperature of this chip should be, I know the official AMD statement states that it will run at upto 75 deg C, I doubt very much if any chip would be stable at this temperature, anyone know a rough guide. I have heard that the Athlon XP does run quite a bit hotter than the bog standard Athlon does, my m8 has the 1.2 and his system runs at about 49 deg C. What should I expect from the 1500 XP?

Any help, advise or newbie slagging is very much appreciated :p

Welcome to the forums.

Actually the XP's run a bit cooler than the older Athlons and TBirds. But the temp is really affected by your heat sink and fan (HSF). Your XP should not hit above 40 with a good HSF, and 49 is considered borderline hot, especially since you're not ocing.

So my advice is to get a good HSF.

I have the asus a7a266 and I have heard that the temperature readings in this are incorrect, I am hoping this is true because no matter what HSF I put in (tried Volcano and thermalite super orb) the orb helped keep cooler by a few deg C, with the Orb my CPU temp is being reported as 52 deg C while just browsing and having ICQ open, with the Volcano I weas sitting at about 56. This is obviously to hot but if my board is reporting it wrong then it might be safe, anyone any ideas on this.

Cheers guys
