I have a dilemma. my parents promised me that they would buy a motherboard and processor for me. i am a hardcore gamer. which will provide me with the better gaming experience, the celeron or the thunderbird?

The Tbird, no contest, a better choice would be a Celly 1.2+Abit ST6, but the Sdram holds back the performance, so i would probably go with the 1GHZ Tbrid, and a nice fan and some crucial and oc the snot outta it....
edit: the celly 1.2 is not a normal celly and this is why it is about the same in power as a Tbird at the same speed, but it ocs to about 1.45 with a good mobo guaranteed...

Tbird, and if later on, you wanna upgrade to somehting more powerful, you won't have to change mobos, as AMDs will still have the same socket A up to maybe the Barton (2 cores from now, as the next will be the Thoroughbred, and then will be the Barton). Also the added cache over the Celery 1GHz, and the added bandwidth can help out pretty much. And if you get a good stepping (a "y" as the first letter on the 3 line of text on the CPU die), you can OC them pretty much. Some even got up to 1.4 - 1.5 GHz with air cooling. Plus, on AMDs you can OC with the multiplier too, so that's another advantage.
Personally, if I were to buy a Celeron, I'd go like funnyperson1 and get a new 1.2GHz one, as they have added full-speed cache, and are in .13 micron manufacturing process, versus the .18 of the tbird. the celeron would therefore **in theory** OC higher, as they run cooler and with less voltage. But for this new Celeron, you need a new mobo with the new chipset from Intel, as they don't use the normal FCPGA Socket 370, but the FCPGA2 socket 370, which has different pin assignments. Although a slocket is certainly available, it would sure cost some big $$$. So in the end, the Athlon is a better choice as you have compatibility with older and newer products, depending on the chipset tho, but hte platform will remain the same for about a year. If you're going to OC this baby, all depending on the chip, you could get a different OC than someone else with the same chip.
Hope this helps
The TBird defintely!
Although FunnyPerson1 made an excellent comment that the 1.2 Tualatin Celeron and a Tualatin Ready Motherboard is an excellent combo and should cost around the same.
Once ocing the Celly-Tual the Celly Tual matches up with the XP and P4.. Jeezes :)
You should see the results of those thing people here usually get to 1.6 gig !
