View Full Version : Power supply consumption?

Lets say I have 2 power supplies
a 500 Watt and a 1000Watt
my system only needs 350Watt to run
and since im super poor, i dont use A/C or anything. I just run the computer and NOTHING else
so is my electric bill going to be 2x as high if i use the 1000watt instead of 500watt?
or does it scale to what the system needs?
i know components scale to hwo much they consume, but it doestn mean that the power supply unit wotn constantly suck power
I know cell phone chargers CONTINUE to suck like 90% of the power, EVEN when no cell phone is plugged in. They just release heat, and thats it.

I find it had to believe that they always take power, maybe only a handful of them because I've had 5 different cellphones so far and they don't heat up when not in use.

just because you cant feel any heat being emitted
doesnt mean its not releasing energy (heat)
if you run it through a volt monitor thingy device. I forget what its called
and when you have it plugged in with cell phone, vs plugged in without cell phone, vs not plugged in at all
there is a clear distiction between all of them.
random link, backing it up. im trying to find more reputable site, hold on!

http://www.treehugger.com/files/2005/11/treehugger_home_2.phpNo, I will argue that because heat=raise in temp.
In physics, heat, symbolized by Q, is energy transferred from one body or system to another as a result of a difference in temperature.
And lol at that site, treehugger? That is a little biased don't you think?

Energy does increase heat
However
if the energy consumption is low, and its disappited quick enough
you cannot feel it. and plastic cover probably wont give you those accurate senses of touch. if you take it apart, and left it on for a few days, im sure u could find something thats warm to the touch. or at least tell that there is some heat being generated
when your friend jumps in water that is 78 degrees
it will not feel like the water just got warm ( no pee jokes) simply based upon his body releasing heat into the water
Though it will heat the pool, at the same time the pool will release the heat into the air. and thus preventing it from ever getting warm
if you plugged the charger in, into a room COMPLETELY temperature tight/proof?(if its possible) It would indeed heat up! jsut very slowly

Pfft.
What powersuppplies are they? they could say the are 500w but if they even do do 500w it propbably does it inefficiently,

ok then
here at 80$ efficiency
500watt * 80% = 400watts
1000 * 80% = 800 watts
its still a 2x more power consumption question
regardless of what they really do or not

http://news.com.com/Energy+hogs+in+your+living+room/2100-1041_3-5965771.htmlYes, the charger MAY dissipate some heat due to the resistance in the circuits or wiring, but it will be an EXTREMELY small amount, almost 0.
And both those sites just say they do use energy, they provide NO PROOF what-so-ever as to WHY they do...

It's giving off small current heat/energy.
If your all bothered about it stop using your cell phone?

Thideras, your right. I guess i didnt read the sites close enough. I was to anxious in finding some sites. I know i read it somewhere reputable. Anyways until I find it, Your right!
JamesXP, we have gotten off topic. this was never about cell phones. It was about power supply consumption. However, Thideras already answered the question that it only consumes what it needs. Which is what I was hoping for.
so this round, Thid was right 2 times!

get a watt meter and you'll see for yourself.
