If Successful this heatsink mod is going to be called the Sh!tter.
Seriously,
Im going to take a heatsink and drill a vertical holes in it from the base up, the hole will be DIRECTLY on the cpu die, then Im going to smelt some silver and pour it in the hole, seal it up and relap the area and the cpu die will be directly on the Silver 'Core'. The amount of silver needed is very small and this idea may be a serious improvment in hsf's I am going to use anodized aluminum as Aluminum disipates the heat faster than the silver thus a lower rpm, semi quiet fan can be used. But I will also make one out of Copper as well as you never know. I'll also try several holes filled with silver as well.
This could be as famous as the 'HOOT shute' but its gonna be called Silversinksam's Sh!tter
:p
Gonna find a suitable hsf to try this on over the weekend.

sweet idea.. make me a all sliver water block :)

I was thinking about getting some of that silver solution they use for electroplating and plating the bottom of a sink, or all of it or something.
Keep wondering, you know it was said that copper conducts way better but don't radiate as good as aluminum, well, does silver radiate any better? if it does it would be a real good case for plating copper sinks with silver I would think.
Anyhoo, sounds like an interesting idea, though you could lose some vlauable area if you take out fins.
Hmmmm maybe if you just drilled part way through, leaving the fins standing, if they're long ribbed ones, then stuck it upside down in fine sand and poured the silver in the hole, that would preserve some cooling area....
Or you could stuff your sink upside down in the sand, pull it out carefully and fill the impression with silver.... :-)

doh yeah, its the anodising on ally that does the radiation trick, hmmmm what if you let the silver go real black???? There must be some oxidising solutions that would help speed that up, at a guess, pottasium permanganate solution or hydrogen peroxide maybe.... hmm.

There are at least two heatsinks that used silver, one was the "Silver mountain" (Silver plated copper HS...I believe) and the other was the "Silverado" don't know if it was a copper or alu HS but it had a 50 gram silver base, both never made it to the top.
I'd love to see you make one that does work real well (at least better).

I've said this before and I'll say it again,
Silver plating is absolutly useless and doesnt help the thermal dynamics. (IF it does its so negligable its irrelavant)
The only exception that I know of is when older model Kanie Hedgehog users plate the heatsink pins near the base. Some of the Kanie users have has the pins come loose and the silver plating helps them remain steadfast and improves the thermal dynamics of the HSF.

KILLorBE,
Im going to try what do I have to lose? I dont think Ive ever read about anyone trying a silver core on the inside....The amount of silver needed will be one to 3 ounces I imagine depending on the HSF drilled.
PS Killorbe Hows the weather out there in your part of the world.
I like to go there in the spring.

If I had some silver laying around I would probably try something like that too.
Bout the weather, that's hard to answer its not bad but it isn't good either.
The weather changes a lot, right now the weather here is better as in Spain, Italy and some parts of France.
If they say that its gonna rain, there's a good chance that it won't rain, you just never know.
In the winter temps hover between 0C and -20C, in the summer temps hover between 20C and 35C.
It can be freezing cold in April but it can be pretty warm as well.
i think its a cool idea. if it works youll have proof that you really do think better on the john. i believe it.. let us know how it goes.
It takes pressure off the brain....
And do try not to call it the John. :D
John
haha, well this is a family forum, so i wanted to keep it clean.. so think of it that way, calling it a john is one "clean" way of talking about it. feel better??:D

remember that silver is only just better then copper as a heat conductor, why dont you go even more up the scale as only a little bit will be used?

Aluminum disipates the heat faster than the silver
you know it was said that copper conducts way better but don't radiate as good as aluminum
Radiation is pretty much irrelevant as the temperature difference is too small. Convection is the one you want and Al is no better than Ag at it. Al is used instead of Cu or Ag because of cost and weight and easier machining, it performs less well due to it's lower conduction given equal designs. There is a reason things like the SK6 are all copper.

Silversink, get a right from ThermalTake to manufacture and sell Silver Orbs. Ill be the first to review them :) (use the crystal orb body)

ButcherUK,Thats why I am going to be using a secret blend of Cusil on this project.
Ant, Dont assaociate me with Thermaltake, I have a good reputation :) You trying to ruin me :p

mmmm Cusil, sounds like it could be a sweet HSF :)
I'd offer to buy one but I'm into h2o :)

K, take their design, and make all silver sinks based on ORB design. Make the innards also orb like, though, like a spiral, and mount the fan on top.

How about a cusil filled MCX462 ;)
would the heat transfer between the silver plug and aluminium fins be very efficient?
