I didn't see a thread mentioning this yet, but Slashdot has a link to some really cool news about soon-to-be fans. In about 2 years it'll be interesting to see the crazy things being introduced to the HSF market!
As the article says, in testing they boast an 8C drop in temps, used 1/150 as much power as conventional fans, use no magnets and produce almost no noise.

Way cool! (not a pun)
I built an ion or 'electric wind' fan, but it didn't have enough wind to be usable. These sound like they got that beat. I used a DC to DC laser power supply, but it doesn't have enough amperage to make much wind. It does make ozone, but ya don't want to breath that.
blew me away
yes include pun..

As a retired engineer i find that very interesting, but as a skeptic I also am very pesimistic, if you read the article carefully they claim a 8* reduction in temps, but what was the baseline? You can buy Piezoelectric fans now and just the blade runs $149 but if you buy 100 its $39 ea but the Piezoelectric Motor/Actuator Kit will run you $499

Anyway this is a cool developtment but I would plan on Overclocking with this fan, as you will probably end up with a micro processor keychain......
I guess we will see, to the future.....!
