i can get a free evaporator from work but what to know if anyone has used one before and if its worth it. i would say its about 2.5" thick, 15" or so wide and 15" 's or so long. i'm about 95% sure it's all alumium and i've heard thats not good for clean water. any truth to it? i would take some pictures but i have no camera.

it looks roughly like this, but dirty.

It won't be good for your copper water block. IIRC the aluminum will erode and place deposits on your copper bits... not very good in the long run.

If you want cheap and don't want to spend $120 on a big rad, go to autozone or any auto parts store and order a pair of heatercores, (Fedco 2-199), for $20 each and they'll match/outperform even the best WC rads on the market with the correct fans.

well i work at a dealer so i can get stuff either free or cheap. so i will look into heater cores. what pressure does a swiftech mcp650 pump run at? i remember reading 50psi.

50psi might be the max the pump can take, but it doesn't generate anywhere near that much pressure. IIRC, that pump has about 10feet of head. That's only 4.3psi.

The 2-302 heater cores (I always order for a '77 Bonneville, 400 cid w/AC) work better for me but all my rads are external and all are heater cores - for $20 a pop retail you can't lose. Maybe the 2-199s fit inside cases better? Anyway, copper heater cores are the way to go for cheap - any aluminum in a loop (even a fill port) is just bad news because of galvanic corrosion.

Eventually aluminum and copper will eat each other when combined with water - that's why we have to use high-tech radiator fluids nowadays, to inhibit corrosion between the different metals in an engine. Unfortunately those fluids are lousy for heat transfer in a computer and should be used sparingly (≤ 5%), if at all ...

I use a '77 Bonneville inside my case. I painted it black to look a little more aesthetically pleasing. Great rad it is.
