View Full Version : IPhone Who Has One?
So does anybody from this Forum have it?
What do you think about it?
Is all the hype true is it the next generation of all in one phone PDA so on?
Is it worth $500 to $700 bucks?

unfirtunatly it will get a fair percentage of the market even if it turns out to be a peice of crap because of the iPods success.
Anyway, i aint getting one, and there already are plenty of all-in-one pdas around. I think the touch screen will be a big hit though.
I have never seen so much hype about a phone/all in one system ever like this..
I have seen toys and games movies get this much hype , but never like this for a phone.
I wouldnt take any product even for free that begins with I
I went to an iStore and checked one out, not a bad piece of hardware, but not $599. I also talked to the security guard hired just for the iPhone's launch, and he said that over 150 people lined up for one in my small town, but they were well stocked, and had plenty for all (ahem Sony...).
I would buy one if I needed a nice phone/player combo, but my wallet ain't that fat and my Razr and Zune work well enough as is.

Well, you can consider this a "toy". Just one for those of us who are lucky to have enough money to buy a $600 glorified smartphone.
But still, I doubt you could GIVE me one. I never was a fan of the whole phone/mp3 combo things, better have to seperate things designed for one purpose so they do it well instead of cramming whatever you can into one thing. I guess its just one of those things, I think on all the other mp3/phone combo things the music sounds like crap, and Im not about to go spend $400-$600 on this thing just incase its the same.
I love toys. I'm going to be honest and say that I love the "status" that comes with the tech toys. I bought a razr when they first came out and before they mass marketed it as the "free with 2 year service" phone and every damn person got one. I loved it because it used to turn heads. I won't touch an iphone V1. I really hope they're crunching a V2 to be released in 6 months. Besides the nice eye candy (can we say rainbow imac suckage?) and impressive ipod features... this thing just sucks as a phone and pda. so disappointed with it right now.

not getting one. as much as my inner techy wants it, i cant. 1) its way too expensive 2)my cell phone carriers cancellation charges and 3) unless it comes out with Verizon, i cant anyway, because where i live Verizon is the only company that gets decent coverage.
This thing is the cabbage patch kid of the IT world.
It does nothing more than what a common PDA phone available at half the price (1/4 used) can do. Furthermore, there are many things it cannot do that a common PDA phone can.
I couldn't care less about eye candy and an MP3 player. I'm much more interested in practical business applications such as synchronization with Outlook, the ability to view and edit Excel spreadsheets and Word documents and run available programs like C-tide and Haali reader.
I'll stick with my $150 reconditioned Audiovox 6700 PDA phone for now, thanks.
I haven't even considered buying one, and never will.
If I wanted a PDA (which I don't) I would do research on the PDAs available now, and I have absolutely no doubt that I'd end up getting something other than the Iphone, even if I wasn't biased against Apple's portable products.
As far as I'm concerned, the Ipod isn't a very good mp3 player (terrible codec support, the batteries are non-replacable [what he f***?], data corruption is very common), and there's no reason the Iphone won't be another flashy but dysfunctional device.
Is it worth $500 to $700 bucks? :confused:NO!
Could this be a poll?

my GF has one, and I kinda like it (yes, I'm a gadget *****). :D the main selling point to me is their full feature browser and ipod function and BMW connectivity. I like to be able to browse the net while I'm out (a full browser, no slim down version, nor small screen joke!), and I have a old ipod mini (for car usage) that I want to replace for awhile.
the iphone fit what I want. I'm currently have a blackjack, yes, it can browse the net too, but it's a PITA to browse site like this forum! and 3G? forget it! I've turned off on mine w/in a week of ownership of the blackjack! why? all current 3G chip sux battery big time!! my blackjack can't even last more than 10hrs in standby, just sitting on the desk!!! turned it off, it last over a day!! plus EDGE is pretty fast and another nice thing 'bout the iphone's browser is it's a full browser, so site you've visited is store in cache to speed up on next visit! unlike other mobile browse that have to load again everytime!
plus BMW has full iphone support! mean, I can connect the iphone to the car's ipod adapter for music/ipod function and it will also pair the phone to the car via bluetooth too. when listening to music, if the iphone ring, it will mute the music and switch to phone function automatically and let you talk through the car speaker and mic.
well, I guess it's really depends on "what" you need from it! like me, it fits what I need perfectly! already has a ipod? it's not worth it then! no need a full browser? you don't need this phone neither!

Actually, according to this, (http://directorblue.blogspot.com/2007/07/whats-hidden-in-iphones-fine-print.html) its closer to $2,250 since it requires a 2 year agreement. Everyone who is thinking about buying/owns/know someone who owns an iPhone should read that, dont know how reliable the guy is but I was shocked.

I'm still thinking either get one now (which I don't have to) or wait for the 2nd gen too. but my theory is, since they won't release the iphone over in asia till next summer (08'), I highly doubt they will release a new version that soon? it's like releasing a new version when they finally release the iphone over at asia at the same time? that isn't a very good business move imho!

Well I guess it's no idiot proof. Nice that he got it replaced.
That last pic confirms, it is a fingerprint magnet. Though, I hear it wipes down pretty well. I'll wait for the price & hype to go down before I consider getting one. I just don't have $600 to blow on a phone/pda/music player.

Damn, wishing I did have $600 dollars to blow though. The chance to jump in on a developing project like this would awesome. If it doesn't have a music player built in, I'm sure you download or port one. There are plenty available for Linux.
WTH! Is $500 the new price point for everything now?
$500 for console gaming systems.
$500 for graphics cards.
Now $500 for multimedia cell phones.
As I said before, I wouldn't spend $500 on a console, I wouldn't spend $500 on a graphics card, and I surely wouldn't spend $500 for a phone.
$500. What's next? I don't want to know!

Definitely not worth the price for someone who already has an Ipod, but the addition of 3G, real third party apps, and a better camera could change that imho.
From what I've read it seems to actually be the best iPod ever with a beautiful screen and a nice way to scroll through all your media. If only it had more storage it could compete just as a media player.
The Phone reception and speaker/mic quality are supposed to be very good.
I'll buy one when I can get it with service plan for less than $2-300.
Be fair though, if you're going to include cost of the service plan and data plan in computing the cost of the iphone, you should do that with every other smart phone as well.
LandShark, my Blackjack battery lasts about two days with 3G on and Bluetooth off, plus they included a seperate REPLACABLE battery with charger, so I always have one charging and swap em out every morning if I remember. Granted I only talk for a couple hours a day at most and rarely actually use the internet except for email. However, 10 hours in standby seems like an exaggeration to me.

Actually most non underground music be it MP3 or Itunes purchased will show an Album Cover, just do a select all and click "Get Album Artwork" and Itunes will find all the album covers it can from CDDB or whatever.
Sure DJ mixes won't have anything, but you can't really fault Apple for that.

You guys all know I like to waste uber amounts of money. But all of my friends have UTCs and blackberrys, and they all told me not to waste my money on an iphone. I bit the bullet and bought the 8GB model, and it is hands down a great purchase. I even convinced most of my friends that badmouthed the phone to purchase one after they played around with it a little.
The only problem is the EDGE network, I average 100kbps which is very very slow. Apples response is that the 3G hardware is bulky and very battery hungry. Also, GPS is not integrated into this phone, and the third negative is that although the digital camera does have a few more MP's than the standard camera phones at 2.0MP. You need to literally be a statue in order to take a clear (non fuzzy picture) I was out at the bars in NYC last weekend and 98% of all my photos were blurry from shaky hands.. It reminds me of a logitech quick cam.
Other than those three negatives, I am very happy with the phone but when those kinks get worked out I will hopefully have someone to buy this phone so I can upgrade to the next gen.

STATUS UPDATE.
Been using it for 1 week now.
Internet browsing is comparable to a first gen 28.8 modem.
I must say the EDGE network has been very slow, and has problems connecting a good 30% out of the day. It will say EDGE unavailable. And re-connections take about 15 seconds to a minute. We definitely need some broadband or 3G on this phone.

All in all, I do enjoy using this phone. Wireless service has been pristine, and functionality of the phone is great. But, I am starting to reconsider my purchase now that the internet/data connection is proving to be worrysome.
Maybe Apple will follow-up with my typed statement. hehe fat chance in hell.
Next gen iphone with GPS should correct these issues and hopefully change toward a broadband solution I hope.
my brother got the iPhone, and for all that knock it down are DEFINITELY jealous. there's no reason @ all to knock it down... people spent $400+ easily on PDAs and Dell Axims and Palm Pilots and whatnot... the iPhone DESTROYS those and on top of that is just a tad bit more.
look, it's expensive b/c it should be... i bet apple spent million and millions for its production, and the product SHOULD be expensive.
i feel bad for those that can't afford it, but it's definitely not a product to crap on... it's truly an AWESOME product... and i'm not one to usually say that. i'm sure it will have problems, but in the end they will be figured out.
now on the other hand, i have a Razr, and the thing is so awesome how slim it is, but i hate how crappy it was manufactured (software-wise)... mine gets slow as heck and i physically i just dislike the buttons.
all that knock it down are DEFINITELY jealous

I have very strict priorities... FIRST the gold plated toilet seat, and matching bide' THEN the 600 dollar iPhone. I know, it's easy to get those mixed up.
To be honest, I don't even have a cell phone yet even though I can afford one. Believe it or not, there are still a couple people in the world who aren't interested in being electronically tethered to a phone. It's a totally optional $45 monthly bill. (Much more $$$ if it's the iphone)
People always ask, "what about emergencies". And it makes me wonder how many emergencies these people actually have. I'm 39 years old, and so far, not a single emergency that required I have a cell phone. Never.
I love technology, but I HATE cell phones. Ruined the movie theatre experience, ruined restaurants, and made driving much more dangerous. (I a have to honk at people at green lights constantly... because they are texting at the light!)
The only good use I can think of for a cell phone is to give them to all the crazy homeless people in downtown Portland. That way, when they're talking to themselves, it will look like they are actually just having a nice conversation.
My landline costs 27 bucks a month, I never worry about 'minutes' and I never get interupted when I'm eating and driving. And when my boss asked for everyone's cell phone number so he can 'get ahold of us in case of emergencies' I proudly told him "I DON'T HAVE ONE!!" :santa: He can deal with his own 'emergencies'.
I don't want an Iphone, I don't want a fax attached to my belt. I don't want a printer-hat, or even a photocopier attached my tighty-whities.

I know whatcha mean! I also don't have caller ID, because I got tired of my mother 'inferring' I was avoiding her calls... If I had a cell phone, I have several people in my life that would suddenly feel like they needed to contact me hourly, and I'd have to start screening the calls, and then people start to feel snubbed. I've got most of local friends trained to keep the conversations limited to 'hey dude, I'm coming over'. Seriously, why are we talking on the phone for an hour when you live 10 minutes away? C'mon over. Drink Beer with me, check out my new computer :) Play a game.
The iPhone is a dramatic... I might even say breathtaking piece of utterly unneccesary technology... er... unlike my two thousand dollar gaming computer :/

Most overated overhyped phone ever... the menu is pretty cool with the touch screen. But good luck doing texting or email at a reasonable speed and no 3G data? Edge only? Only a 2MP camera, non expandable memory? For the record I do work for a competitor to Cingular er At&t whatever... but I pay close attention to our competition. And I know the iPhone is selling well but I just dont understand the hype for the reality that this phone is, not that revolutionary except for the menu system.

thanks Scott. I think I ripped out my hernia again laughing. I'm ordering some of his Tshirts tonight. The guy is undeniable.
...and for all that knock it down are DEFINITELY jealous. there's no reason @ all to knock it down...
I must say that that comment is awfully broad, and certainly in my case, patently untrue, as I bid adieu to the days of not being able to get exactly what I want, when I want it some 20 years ago.
Put plainly , the Iphone is useless for a serious business user. Here are just a few issues:
The inability to synchronize Outlook contacts, notes, calendar, and tasks
The inability to open Word documents or Excel spreadsheets
Being restricted to a single network that only exists in the US (goodbye international business clients) and NO SIM INTERCHANGEABILITY
The inability to change batteries, (goodbye, long international flights where you use your PDA)
The inability to use any kind of memory card,( goodbye expansion and interoperability with a multitude of devices that use SD cards)
The inability to use a command line interface (goodbye server control)
These are not issues borne out of jealousy, but real world reasons not to use this device. Add to this that any common pda-phone currently available on EBAY for around $165 can do all of this tasks swimmingly well, as well as run the myriad software programs available for all xscale PDAs.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again: The Iphone is the Cabbage Patch Kid (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cabbage_Patch_Kids)of the IT world.

I didn't do enough research like you, so maybe I stand corrected. :D
Though I still think it's a cool gadget... I just like the fact that you can browse the net the way it does... that's a BIGGIE for me.
my brother got the iPhone, and for all that knock it down are DEFINITELY jealous. there's no reason @ all to knock it down... people spent $400+ easily on PDAs and Dell Axims and Palm Pilots and whatnot... the iPhone DESTROYS those and on top of that is just a tad bit more.
Yeah, I won't go into another list here... but there are far cheaper PDA phones that do far, far more than the iPhone, as well as having broadband internet.
The iPhone is one of those flashy, cool-looking Thermaltake products that give sub-standard actual performance. If you like the look of it first and foremost, spend the cash. If you want something cheaper with more features and better operation, look elsewhere.

I'm gong to have to agree here. It's funny how the iphone haters will clearly outline why they hate the phone or why they think it's not revolutionary.
iphone lovers will respond with ... i can scroll through my tunes.
I've also heard that the phone itself is completely terrible like they built an ipod and then threw on a phone later. and what is up with that headphone connector? did apple really have to screw people like that? I hope V2 will address most of the issues.. i'll buy an iphone then.
