Just modded my Volcano 7... cut out the heat/fan speed control diode and reconnected the two wires. Now it runs at a much higher RPM. To take care of the added noise, I used a thin layer of silicone between the fan and heatsink, cut vibration and noise a lot. MBM now shows 36 C from about 39 C, and the noise level seems about the same.

nice, i tried using sil;icon but i didn't let it cure a bit before i stuck the fan on and it took a mallet to take it off

Was it easy to take out the Diode?

From the picture that I've seen, it looked like the diode was "in line" with the wires so you can just snip, twist the wires back and get out the electrical tape:)

Couldn't find wire-cutters, so I just used a fillet knife. A tiny bit of electric tape and removal of fan in order to set the wire outta the way was all it took. Total about 3-5 minutes. Didn't even have to remove HS from CPU... just set the case on it's side a worked carefully. RPM up from 3300-3600 range to 5000-5100. Volcano 7 works oh so much better now.
I recommend this mod to any1 with the Volcano 7 (or other variable fan speed HSF), especially if you have good case airflow, since the temp/rpm diode increases the fan rpms based on your ambient temperature.

Another mod you could do to this kind of HSF is to put a reuostat in to the line where the diode comes out so you could still turn down the rpm's on the fan when not under full load. Just a random thought. :)

The diode is in series so it's nothing more then removing it from the series.

Any pics of this mod?

no pics, no scanner. Yes, it was really easy. Dropped my CPU temp to 35 C idle 38 C load, but then again MBM isn't so accurate, and it was kinda cold in my house. Good luck to yer friend tsunami
I have made a system tonight with Volcano 7 and Athlon 1700+. I´ve just pushed the sensor in one of the holes that are on the HEATSINK, so that it touches the CU-basement.-and no problems. When MSI Pro2 says me it is 35C CPU @full load and my Volcano starts 5000! Very accurate and no cutting!
