edit: woops when I first read your post I thought your son had a x850xt instead of saying it was the best. Anyways the following post should show your what cards are better regardless.

The best performer is the 3 slot gecube x1950xt; even though it has less memory then the 7950gt the x1950xt has been shown to be the better performer of the bunch. I would just upgrade the mobo and go pci-e if possible if your looking for something better then the x850xt which IMHO is tied for the 4th best agp card out there even to this day. Anyways the cards that should perform better are the x1950pro, 7950gt, and gecube x1950xt. Anything else would be a downgrade or just be an upgrade for the sake of getting pixel shader 3 in the case of the 7600gt and 7800gs which perform similarly to the x850xt.

The price difference of the high end agp cards vs pci-e cards is huge look into how much it would cost you to upgrade your mobo to a pci-e one you might even end up spending less money for more performance even with buying two components instead of one. If however it costs more to switch to pci-e then go ahead and go with one of the previously mentioned cards.

edit: after rereading the initial post I would just go for something like the x1950pro which doesnt cost to much but should give you good performance. The x1950xt and 7950gt cost a significant ammount more and IMHO are not really worth the cost.

If you are an ATI guy get a x1950XT, and if you are a nVidia guy get a 7950GT. I've had my XFX 7950GT 512mb AGP for over 2 months and I love it, it beats the ***** out of my 7800GS.

Thanks guys il see if I can pick one up cheap. The PCIe mobo is a complete new pc as id have to get new memory, cpu and gfx card. My son is only 10 years old but wants some nice eye candy for games. The X850XT apears to be faster than a X1950 pro which is odd?

Il get looking and see what comes up on ebay.

Thanks.

I've got one of those game playing 10-years olds myself, and he, too, likes his games to look good.

I can only imagine what he'll "need" when he's 16. :)

It wasnt that long ago that I upgraded my whole pc, well I say upgraded I didnt use much of my pc. The X850XT I had myself not long ago before getting a 7950GX2. Both my brothers have a X850XT and is still holding up fine.
