I wouldn't hesitate to buy the Maxtor, but the Seagate comes with a 5 year warranty versus "only" 3 with the Maxtor. I don't know that I've used any drive for more than 3 years.

This from lappy boy. I don't think you've used a whole computer for more than 3 years! :santa:

Great deal OP

well, i took you advice. just got my order number... now i have to hold out until it comes here, i just unintalled GTA san andreas and Need for speed Carbon to make room. this is getting desparate. darn Supreme Commander is sucking up all my space. and i have no clue where the rest of my space is going, i need to format my OS.

See sig - laptop was sold off in June. Back to a decent OEM desktop.

I think the primary 160GB drive in my HTPC is getting kinda old, might have 2 years of use out of it.

No way in hell the new PC is going to last 3 years. I'll probably get another machine in 2008 and retire this one to the living room as the newer HTPC. Computers are becoming more and more desposable these days, and for the cost of the OS alone it's almost worth timing my Vista upgrades around PC purchasing.

Yep, I scored one of those myself. I really wasn't looking for a hard drive, but a 500 gig Seagate for $100 was just too good to pass up. :D

^ thats what the drive frys sells is. Seagate bought out maxtor and since has been rebranding their hdds as maxtors. This apparently is a 7200.9 according to something I read elsewhere (sorry no link cant remember exactly where) However this deal is long dead now.

I'm done with Maxtor drives. Just base on personal experience, I had 2-3 maxtor drives that went dead on me. Western digital, on the other hand, had been great. Anyway, just a personal opinion.

Figuring the physical nature of a hard drive, 1-2 years is a decent lifespan. Did they last a month or a year? (just curious for conversation sake, I have no personal interest in the matter either way as I'm about to explain)

Has anyone (not the drive manufacturers) started keeping track of fail rates? Personal experience is one thing, facts and figures are another.

Professionally I touch 10-50 computers a week. Of those, an easy 1/4 are hard drive failures. Of those, I haven't noticed any particular pattern (makes, models) that fail more than others. This is also true of my personal experience.

i had one maxtor fail within 4 months, and then this replacement has almost been going for 12 months. so yea, i think its just sometimes you get a dud.

but my 500gig just came in a few days ago, its quite fast, and quieter than my maxtor IDE drive. im enjoying it.

Well, i guess it is just my bad luck with maxtor drives....

Anyway, I actually picked up an EIDE Western Digital 320G drive from circuitcity yesterday for $50 after MIR. This maxtor is still a better deal.

I wouldn't have bought it if it was a real Maxtor, as yes, they have awful track records.

Just got home, the box is here, I'll post results with the new hard drive. :P

all hard drives have a risk of being DOA or going dead in a short amount of time.......
