BinarySuperman
12-14-01, 11:47 AM
Well i was looking around my small room and wondering what can i make a computer case out of, then my hamster started to grind on the cage(very annoying) then an idea struck me, my hamsters cage is big enough to fit my abit motherboard and everything else, so now after i work for christmas i will buy another hamster cage and i'll make the right mods and i'll post a pic of the master piece, and im hoping its the first hamster cage computer cage.:D

this is what the cage looks like...

Should try and set it up so that a fan turns the wheel or something like that.

and that tower thing could be a small evaporative cooler!

BinarySuperman
12-14-01, 12:23 PM
lol, im not gonna use any of the stuff like the wheel cause they are useless, im just gonna use the cage itself, it has 6 round holes which i will use for case fans, my question is what should i use to cut it, so i can make space for my cd-rom??the cage is plactic.

What would really suck is if it started chewing on the wires... This is a very cool idea and it will cost a h*** of a lot less than biulding an Acrylic case!

Are you going to try having the hamster living in there?
I have an acquaintance who suggested putting a goldfish in the reservior of a bong cooler. This could be the next big thing: LIVE ANIMAL MODS.

lol, kinda sick.. but it would be funny..

I wouldnt just put it rock solid in there, i'd get a alumnium side and put on the hamster cage, and somehow get that piece of aluminum to stay in the hamster cage, that could damage ur board if u didnt put somethin under it.. Easily..

I Wouldnt really toy with that. I'd get some 400 mhz comp and test it..not ur main box dude.. If that 400 works good.. Then put it in.. but you gotta think bout it.....

Just sayin

lol, no im not putting my hamster in there, he's an animal and he will eat my cpu, lol, im gonna make sure my mobo aint touching anything, i will make everything as if it were a real case, if my computer breaks down, i will start laughing, then i would start crying and i would spend alot of time thinking about where i would get the money for a new comp, j/k about the crying part:D

You could always replace the wheel with a centrifigural blower... Thats what I immedietly thought of when I saw it!

i've got a better idea. why don't you make a case out of an actual hampster?:D

Diggrr
12-25-01, 12:01 PM
Yeah, dip it in fiberglass resin (gel type) and blow it up with an airblast/compressor.
Dremel a hole in the tummy for a window, maybe some red led's for eyes. Pobably could fit a micro ATX in there. USB in the ears. I won't mention the PS2 port...:eh?:

wait there are professionals who make cases out of hampsters? damn someone's already beaten me to it!
damn and i've already wasted 2 dremels bits cutting open my hampster's stomach:(

BinarySuperman
12-25-01, 11:35 PM
well i just ordered a dremel wireless kit for 50 bucks from the homedepot, i hope its a nice tool for case mods, can the dremel cut the side panal of my case?

Diggrr
12-26-01, 12:27 AM
Yes it can. I would suggest getting the diamond coated cutting wheel, because on the side of a metal case you're gonna go through alot of tiny cutting disks. Probably a couple just to cut out a fan opening. It cost a few extra bucks but compared to how many of those disks it replaces...priceless.

And for the record, No critters were harmed in the modding of my case.:)
And as for professional help? They wouldn't touch me. I'd take all their time from the other patients.

Jeniva
12-26-01, 07:58 AM
if your going to cut fan openings (circular) go buy a hole saw...there not all that expencive(about 15-20 bucks depending on size) and they work Very good...I cut 2 holes im my side panel for my 120mm fans in less then 5 mins...perfect circles every time...just use a little bit of cutting oil or 3in1 oil..

BinarySuperman
12-26-01, 12:10 PM
which piece do i need to cut the case itself, not make holes, but to cut it with the dremel like a saw?

kronchev
12-27-01, 11:15 AM
doooo it!

Rob Cork
12-27-01, 12:19 PM
I haven't had a chance to read the whole thread, so I might be repeating stuff others have said, but here goes:

Take out any sawdust in there (in case you were thinking of leaving it) - it'll act as a nice inulator, make a mess with the fans and get the insides really dusty really quick :)

You gotta do something with the water bottle thing - maybe use it as a reservoir for a watercooling system, it'd look really cool.

As for the dremel, you can use the cutoff wheels with a bit of practice for pretty much anything - go slowly with them though or you'll burn your way through hundreds of them. Be careful as well that you don't melt the plastic too much - use the slowest speed at first, and only speed up if necessary.

HTH, let us know if you decide to go ahead with this for real - it'd sure look cool! :)

drill a small hole on the boarder of what you want to cut (make an outline first with a marker), then use a coping saw. i did that for acrylic panes and it worked really well, no chance of melting the acrylic, it takes a bit of work, but it cuts the edges really nice

BinarySuperman
12-27-01, 08:28 PM
no i have the wireless and i cut some thick steel today to try it out, although i cracked one of the disks the thing is really cool, im gonna order the hamster cage today, i'll keep you guys updated on the project, im gonna post a link to my site where i will have the pics of the mods.

When yu order the diskes, make sure they're the fiber re-inforced type. (very important)

Christoph
12-28-01, 12:27 AM
What did that cost you? Also, was there anything difficult to figure out?

BinarySuperman

the dremel i got from the homedepot.com for 50 bucks and the hamster cage ran me around 45 bucks.

lol, a dresser drawer thats a good idea, my original idea was to put the computer into a lexmark z51 printer case, but i still use my great printer, so i thought about the hamster cage, and guys if i decide to put the motherboard in a different possition then i might have space for my hamster to walk around, well see when the case arrives.

i dont understand, my drill is more powerfull then my dremel, so how can it only be 2500rpms, and the dremel is 15,000 rpms?? i know a dremel spins much faster, but it cant really handle making holes in walls like a drill can.

Gravity Man
01-04-02, 12:48 AM
The drill has more torque than the dremel, so it is more powerful, even though the dremel spins much faster. Its like comparing my car to the motorcycle my dad races- The racebike will rev higher than 13,000 RPM, but it doesn't produce much torque, so it only makes about 45 horsepower. My car, on the other hand, redlines at 6,000 RPM (although the rev limiter doesn't kick in until 6,250 :D ), and makes much more power, because it makes a lot more torque.

BinarySuperman
01-05-02, 10:17 AM
Yeah everything works as usuall, but my systems temps are really high, there at 43 degress, i guess i'll have to install those 2 120mm fans, hopefully that will help.

lennytiger
01-05-02, 10:34 AM
put a case fan in get a big one and let it blow!! ;)

dreadlord79
01-05-02, 07:24 PM
Use one of those 2 120's you've got to put into the top where that yellow grate is to suck hot air out. Put like a 60 in the hole on the side right next to the CPU to bring nice cool air right to the fan on your SK-6 (?). You might zip ty the cables and such inside of the case to help air flow as well. Hope this helps. Good work! :)

BinarySuperman
01-05-02, 09:49 PM
thanks for the info, i put 2 fans in temperarly till i figure out a nice place to put them where 1 will blow in air and the other will suck it out.
