moving from a 8500GT 256mb to a 512mb 7900GS?
I'll prolly be making the purcahse this week, bu I was just curious what kind of improvements overall :)
I'd really like to go for a 8800, but I don't have the funds to get one right now... if anything maybe a 8600GT, but I heard the 7900GS outperforms it (posted about it here myself)
This is the one i'll be getting

oh and let me add that I STILL can't really decide if I want to go for the 7900.... something inside me says go with 8x series heh
I wish I could go for the 8800 but I need to upgrade my cooling system too so :(

Save for 8800gts 320 or 640... They don't need water cooling either. Factory air cooled gts would run circles around a water cooled 7900gs.

then I'm gonna have to settle for a 320mb instead of 512mb. I just can't spend that much money for the 640mb version (or 768) not anytime soon that is...

I would buy an 8 series myself if I was in your position.

This card after MIR is about the same price as the card you were looking at + step up program + life time warranty.
Here is a pretty good review with the GTS paired with a 7900gt

/edit i'll vote for the 8800gts 320mb card too. :)

Yes, but that 320 will just kill anything a 7900gs can do.
8800 are just that much better!

Yea Trust me Im playing with a 8600gt It has to be have one gell of a oc to keep up with the 7900gtx's . I might try the 8800 320mb out in a few weeks .

I see... so a 320mb 8800 will wipe out a 512 7900 eh
ok, I think I can do that.... just was going to save for a 640 because I like to run my res high, but I really don't wanna have to wait that long with this crappy GFX card that I have
I guess 320 it is... :)
I'll get it very soon I hope :)

what is a cheap 8800 320mb you guys recommend?
really, the cheaper for me the better :) I still need to get my swifttech heatsink, a laser gaming mouse, a 6850 (hopefully) and a pump and a radiator to replace this POS thermaltake crap

anyone knowthe diff between the
320P2N811DX vs 320P2N811AR?
circuit city has the a 8800GTS for just 20 more bux then newegg. I also have a 8500 from them which means I can return it for store credit, making the 8800 cost me 100 bux less to roughly 200 bux :D

well, my 3dmark06 score went from 3306 to 9597
I was hoping for a bit more. (that is with 620/1000) I think I can pull out a bit more from the GPU.

Wow so you went ahead and bought one ........Thats a good score my 7950GT oced hits 6.3k on 3dmark06
Try ocing it and you'll hit 10k easy

yeah man, I got it for 160 after a 10% disc and just told them I was going to upgrade the 8500GT i got from them for a better model. got a 20 dollar rebate too, so it'll be like 140 bux after said and done.... not bad i'd say!
what is a 'safe' high temp for this thing? i'm at like 650/1050 and GPU won't go over 63. i heard it can go pretty high

in games that demand alot (like GRAW 2) 1290x800, games that demand less from teh GPU (like flight simulator which I play alot) I'll check out how 1650x1080 is, it just might work. it ran it just fine @ 1440x900 on my 8500GT so I can't see why this thing can't run it full res :D
I'll basically just run as much as I possibly can. 1st I need to get this GPU OC'd in perfect. and I just found out 711/1070 was a bit much :D

For the stock heatsink, anything up to 80c is ok. Any higher and you want to get an aftermarket heatsink for it.
GPU's run hotter than CPU's so 80c for a CPU would be RIP, but for a GPU its within reasonable limits. They can go all the way up to 120c before the core slows down to reduce heat.

dang!
well I was at 63ish @ 700/1050 and anymore then that, it just freezes up....
I assume it needs more voltage. How do I up the voltage on the GPU? according to everest GPU Vcc is at 3.28. if 80 is a safe high for vid cards and i'm t 63, my only limiting factor seems to be teh voltage now, but I don't see a voltage option (or now of any) to up it

ok, seems like I pretty much stalled. I upped the clock onthe PCI slots and now at 11084 with 650/1020 and 160 PCI clock.
I did 660/1020 and actually went from HDR:4837 to 4833 and SM2:5046 to 4995. Apparently the GPU is kicking back to slower speeds or something because I'm seing losses after 650/1020. Well I'm happy enough, near 11100 is good in my book :) I could prolly get more because with this setting my GPU is only at 65 at full load, but I don't know how to up the voltage for the GPu :( lol
