Well, I already posted about the direct-die cooling failure. The waterproofing went bad.
I took the processor back out to check it after the last post, and one of those little rectangles was toasted. Thinking they were just SMT resistors, I measured the resistence to prepare for replacement, it measured .1 ohms and the others measured 49.8 ohms.
So I used an exacto knife to remove the charred center, and there was nothing left. I cleaned it right down to the substrate.
Out of curiosity, I measured the resistance again...49.8 ohms just like the others. The little metal sides were still there as I needed something to solder to.
To make a long story slightly shorter, I put it back in and it works! I ran Sandra CPU bench, and it matches the standard 1G t-bird like I've got point for point. I'm using it to make this post!
So what are they, and what do they do? Resistence is coming from somewhere else when you measure across them.
