View Full Version : Required horsepower for <3Hr/WU?

I have seen claims of phenominal times under 3 hours per WU. I have no reason to doubt these times but I certainly am curious what hardware is used to achieve them. I am running at 1.5 Gig (125 MHz FSB) and am averaging a little over 6 hours per WU. I wouldn't think that there would be such a big performance difference for a 2 Gig PIV or fastest Athlon. Any insight would be appreciated.

Wow, are you using the screen saver? 6 hours seems quite high for your horsepower. I have a dual duron 1.1 at work and it is able to average around 5:30 even with me using it all day (8:30am till ~5:00pm).

As to your question I have not heard of a simple setup that would give sub 3hr times. Mid 3s seems to be a growing fact for many people but sub 3 is really fast! Maybe a top speed cpu supercooled and OC'd to insane speeds. :) Anyone else have any ideas on this?

I do not use a screen saver. I specify a blank screen. Your comment definetly has me thinking now because I did not realize 6 Hr/WU is long for my hardware but I never had anything to compare it to. Thanks.

That still is the Screen Saver version. If you switch to the Command Line Client, you will see quite an improvement. If you read this Thread it gives detailed instructions on how to set-up the CLC. I used the Screen saver version for a benchmark project and ended up with a 16Hr WU, my average is 5Hrs.

Also, I just wanted to clarify that on the dual duron I run two instances of the CLC SETI and they both average the 5:30 mark.

If you take a look at Team Lamb Chop's benchark comparison page (recently updated) you will see that with their .417 angle range work unit the fastest machines are approaching right on the 3 hour mark. However there are easier work units out there that will easily process in under 3 hours on those machines.

Your average time sounds a little high for that setup. That's what I'm getting with 1.2 gig athlons.

Hi Guy's

Check out the setibenchmark section of our FAQ's to see what it takes to get sub 3hrs crunch times. All times are using are very own benchmark WU.

my T-bird 1.56G w/ KT133a ave. 4.5hr / WU running CLC version. in order for sub-3hrs/WU, i would guess it'll need at least a XP 2200-2400!! 'cos my XP 1.53G (equal 1800+) ave. 'bout 3.4hr/WU. and the XP 1.47G (1700+) ave. 'bout 3.7-3.8hr/WU. both w/ KT266a. and looking at AMDMB's seti benchmark data. an XP running at 1.8G (2200+) just 'bout 3.0hr flat w/ DDR (and it's running very high FSB too!!).

oh, btw, ur time definitly seems high for ur machine!! my GF's Athlon4 1.0G laptop ave. in 5.8hrs/WU. i would highly recommand u to switch to the CLC version. that would sure make u into sub-5hrs range. more like 4.5 or so. ;)

with my xp at 1.6ghz i get 3.5-3.1hr work units depending on the AR

Overall average on my new sys. (see below) is about 3,7 hours for standard speed (no OC).

too bad I've got big problems getting the multiplyer up on this board.

EDIT: I know what it is now. Will try unlocking again...
