View Full Version : I want a good combat class for EVE

I started a mining class, but apparently there is so much more to teh game. I think it would be more exciting if I went into the PvP/Bounty Hunting stuff.
Do I get paid for killing NPC, so I can get good at combat before going PvP? Also, I need suggestions on race/class and stats I want, so I don't regret it later.
Thanks, please reply soon, I am anxious and have a few days off to get a good start.

not bad...i would consider pulling up the willpower a hair to give a more even distribution of stats...leaving the charisma down at 3 is perfectly fine, and is what i did when i made my character.

Really you'll want to question yourself of what type of fighting u want.
Hybrids: Blasters and Railguns (ammo and energy)
Lasers: Gattling and Pulse (energy)
Projectile: Autocannon and Howies (ammo)
Missles: well launchers (ammo)
Generally the races fall under certain categories at least for the ship style and how to fight. Generally this rule applies to most ships there are some of each race which will vary but generally the first in the list below is the chosen weapon.
Gallente fall under the Hybrid/Drone catagory for fighting styles
Amarr fall under Lasers for fighting styles
Caldari fall under Missiles/hybrids for fighting styles
Minmatar fall under Projectiles/Missiles/Drones for fighting styles
I prefer overall Minmatar followed by Gallente closely. I like weapons that use little to no energy to use for other devices on the ship as well as moving fast, I hate slow moving ships. I chose Gallente for a secondary path to follow to say since I love drones there fun little ships that boost your overall damage output, as well I love the hybrid blasters. Me and close range I just love :)
As for starting character I can't help you on that sorry. Its been ages since I've made a character let alone know what all the right ways to make something. Best advised to check out the eve fourms and possibly ask the question there with maybe a race you want or at least guns type you'll aim for and theres lots out there that know which is the ultimate way to go.
Mainly its making sure you get a lower Charimsa and high Percp mainly. Surely having nice Mem, Intel, and Willpower will help out too in the long run but most skills for ship/gunnary require Perception as a primary, and usually Willpower as a secondary. Anything over 10 is usually very nice starting out, as well getting the basic learning skills at least up somewhat will help out alot right away.

Added note, yes you will get paid to NPC hunt. Prefered way is to do missions so you get a nice double whammy on it getting money killing, as well getting money for completing the mission and getting LP to shop in the store for some other nice and usually very expensive/rare things sometimes.

IMHO, the sooner you get into 0.0, the faster you will get good cash, the faster you will get cooler and bigger ships, and the funner the game will be.
BUT. You have to learn the rules of 0.0. You will lose a few ships at the beginning, but you will make good cash in the meantime.
So my suggestion would be that the moment you can fly a BC, get out in 0.0 and kill some rats. Just make sure that you have nice skills, that its not a negative rating system, and that you are not killing officers. If you see an officer - RUN and tell about him to your friends. They will thank you.

Aaaah, merlin. This brings a tear to my eyes!! It is such a great ship! Now I remember all of it......
merlin ->caracal->ferox->raven.... aw, good luck man! Train your missiles skills and you could mount like 4 light missiles on that ship!
I remember how once a new stole from my container and then I fried him with 4 missiles from my merlin.

I must say I am very impressed with this amazing accomplishment.. considering the Merlin has 2 launcher hardpoints.. not 4 :P
On another note.. I'm a Caldari Achura gun bunny character..
I have some skills for effective 0.0 ratting with missles in the 850ksp range with my gun skills just over 1.2mill right now
Rails are the Caldari PvP weapon of choice.. not missles.. missles are pretty much good for PvE and thats it.
I'm currently cross training Frenchie.. err gallente Force recons since they make better rail boats then Caldari force recons imo...
Unless you plan to run alot of missions.. Charisma can stay low..
You mainly want Perception and willpower to train weapon skills and intelligence and memory for ship skills.

Ah, my bad then  . I was thinking of Kestrel. It normally fits only 3 light missiles, but 4 when you learn some skills.

If your going for missles get the drake instead of the ferox.
It's a great game have fun with it. I'm back to living in 0.0 with my new alliance. Great money maker and less boring then missions.

i have to disagree a bit with some of the other posters here on a few accounts...
one point i agree on is the Drake...it is a fantastic ship...but really you are going to need good skills in battleships to most effectivly hunt in 0,0. honestly i think the best thing you can do is find a good corporation that helps new players get to 0,0.
time in empire is not a horrible thing, you get to safely build up your skills and learn the game. 0.0 is a blast though, but i could see it being very frustrating for new players, and is really no place for someone with less than 3.5mill sp probably. stay 100% OUT of low sec space (0.4-0.1) i feel less secure there than in 0.0 lol.
imo getting in with a solid corp early in your eve career is a very important step.

You can rat in 0.0 with a drake pretty easily. No where near as fast as a battleship(raven) but it can be done very easily. I just recently took the time to fly my torp raven out to 0.0. It is much quicker but requiers a larger investment in SP and in ISK.
If i wasn't in a pretty secure area i would not of brought the raven out. I only play a few hours a week ATM. So i miss out on alot of isk making time. But with the time i do have to play the raven helps out alot.
Goes back to If you can't afford to lose it dont fly it reasoning.
I also build my own drakes and ravens (BPC not BPO's i'm not rich and under 1 year old) so that helps with the price alot. Build my own missles/drones and other items i need (BPO's) which is a great time/isk saver. Considering i dont have to make cargo runs to get supplies i need. Just salvage the junk and there i go.

Yeah.. I was hunting in my ferox down in 0.0 (don't know why I didn't have a drake, it sounds like it has a big tank) and I met an officer once :). That was the last time I decided that I could take on stuff that I didn't know about.

Question, is EVE worth playing? I've always enjoyed Space Combat and saw the third Titan kill video recently. Only problem is, it looked pretty boring because people stayed zoomed out to avoid massive lag.
You'd think with systems nowadays you wouldn't have to do that. It's boring enough zooming out in HW/HW2 to look at the minimap, let alone having to do that in a space based MMO.

THe lag isn't system lag its network lag in large battles. Heck my system, window mode at its 2D clocks I pull in 150-220FPS at 1600x1200 everything maxed. Mind you if I have only 1 core it will drop that about 80FPS, didn't think the game was multithreaded but it is and it shows.

yes....the game is very much worth playing. during titan battles, you have to zoom out if you are going to get the titan in view (for the benifit of FRAPS)...they are HUGE...without exaggeration over 1000x's bigger than some of the ships other people were flying.

Think its like only 500x bigger than a Frigate. They are massive I know that for a fact since I know I probably still have some SS of a rifter or something next to a Leviathan from way back in 04.

there is a collage that people have put together that show the accurate size of each ship...i think there are titans over 18k meters so not positive what the frigs are...but going by mass the Levithan (1,800,000,000kg) is 1500x's more massive than the Condor (1,150,000kg) and has over 7000x's more volume

If a frigate is say 50m long well then Titan at 18km is only 360 times bigger ;) You defiantly can't go by mass or volume of the ship since it depends on the race since minmatar ships are lightest and caldari are like the heaviest of all. Then mass and volume just vary ship per ship and its not really an easy thing that can be calculated.

well...not to spiral into a small debate here...traditionally all ships are classified by mass (displacement) since length does not tell the whole story....not to mention the duct tape holding the minmatar ships together does not weigh much!

Ecky X and his gang have been really helpful to me lately. I think I have a buddy that wants to start playing also. He has been researching Corp., and wants to start one though, so we can share corp. ships and stuff.
Although, he read that if another corp. declares war on you, then they can kill you anywhere without penalty, is this true?

yes this is true. any of you OCforums people feel free to contact me in game. my character name is Thrass
starting your own corp could be fun, but i think you would get the most mileage out of joining an established organization. but that is just my opinion...i say this based on how overwhelming this game really can be.
If any of you are looking for an exisisting corp, there is always the OCF corp.
The OCF is made up of mostly people from right here on these forums.

I'm sure it is. I've levelled a character to max on quite a few MMO's and I dont think I've ever played one that wasn't addictive. I just dont have the requisite 18 hours a day to play these days so I'm going to read up on the game and check out prices, I'll probably end up playing.

Indeed about the best part of eve... time is the killer for training not how long your online every day.
Besides that most if not almost all MMO's are $13-15 a month right where EVE falls as well depending how many months you buy up at a time. Or you can pay ingame cash for eve cards for 30days or more from other players.

Yup.. Well only thing guess you could say is a repercussion is they have to pay to initiate and maintain war status if not mistaken.
They could blow you away right infront of concord and they won't even bat an eye. Now if they pod you thats a different story all together.
Players belonging to a warring corporation or alliance may attack the opposition without impunity or loss of security status.
I think that pretty well sums it up right there.

I been playing over 3 years now and i specialized in one race only "minmatar" and i still have to much to train. I got a mate who is into tech II production and when i am over at his place its like he plays a whole different game. I see stuff i have never seen before.
There are alot of choose's in eve, I am pure pvp "pirating in low sec and roaming gangs in 0.0", so i have never build a single item. You could play this game alot time and never be able to do it all i recon.

Indeed. In the past I've had a few characters that have been a mix of things mainly minor in industry and PvP. There is defiantly mass amount of things to do and learn in that time frame so it can take defiantly a while before your OK at even both of them, and even a lot longer before you can be considered good at it if not great. Sure I got minors in industry and it can get me a ways nicely but defiantly not sinking any more time then necessary into it.
I know at least in my experiences I've played mainly Minmatar but have touched Gallente one time. Cross training at least in 2 different ships/guns is hard enough with all there is out there let alone being good at both.
I've played on/off for 4 years. Different characters basically ever time I started up. After playing so many different types and different styles of playing (PvP/PvE to PvE/Building/Mining to POS's and back to PvP/PvE) As well theres more I've missed in there but each time theres certain set of skills you'll want that totally differs from other carriers, most of the time they are dually used for others but once you hit the specialization stage its all or nothing for that carrier path.

I got an Osprey last night. I absolutely LOVE the PG/CPU on it. Not to mention, the shield and armor are nearly TWICE that over my Cormorant. However, I went on a mission against these stupid little things called Incubus, they swarm in fast and within 2000m and tear my ship up. My rockets, and guns couldn't kill em fast enough. So, I tore out my Cormy with 7 guns, and a missile launcher and it was exactly opposite. I've got my ship training up to a sat level, need to work on weapons now, IMO.
