My mom wanted to set a BIOS password on her computer and she typed it in wrong and screwed everything up. I removed the CMOS battery overnight then reiserted it to see if the ROM would be wiped clean but it didn't work. It's a POS NEC K6-2 with American BIOS but with an "NEC" twist. Can I flash BIOS in order to fix it? She has important documents on there and I would really appreciate any help you could offer. Thanks ahead of time.

That happened to me on my old 486.....what we did was take our the CMOS battery, but obviously that didn't work for you.
I dont know of Flashing the BIOS would help.......

Google (http://www.google.com) showed several sites that could help with this. This (http://www.dewassoc.com/support/bios/bios_password.htm) is one I thought pretty elementary.

well nothing should be wrong with the documents aslong as you dont f the hard drive
have you considered a transplant ( putting the hdd on to a computer that working right ?)
in theory i think flashing the bios would work becuase its sposed to take the place of the old bios
but weither or not it will let you do this with out the password is another quesion
there are several programs out there that will tell you the cmos password ( at least there were a couple years ago )
most of them give you the first 3 letters for free and then you ahve to register the to get the rest
do a search for bios password cracker or something like that

Hey thanks again guys, that one clearing CMOS page that Godfodda sent got me pointed in the right direction. Even though removing the battery (for 9 hours i might add:mad: ) didn't work, and there was no mobo manual and the damn NEC support site didn't have my mom's computer model number I still managed to find the CMOS clearing jumper!!! whew, now everything's a little happier around the house when momma is happy ;)
Thanks again,
justin
If you're still having problems just make sure you're pulling the power cable when resetting CMOS and/or removing the batter. Some motherboard/PSU combos let a little constant current through if it's available.

i was thinking about why it wouldnt die if you yanked out the battrie
if its a atx power supply then it would still keep a current in the mobo
mabey he didnt unplug it from the wall just switched it off?

nope, i had the computer unplugged and turned off. I also left the battery out for just over 8 hours. I am still wondering why the BIOS settings hadn't resetted either.

Try unplugging the computer and taking the battery out over night. That should reset it, because it is not getting any power then.

how did you solve it just out of curiosity
If the BIOS keeps the password in the NVRAM taking away the power won't reset the BIOS would likely be the reason why this didn't work.

I found the clear CMOS jumper under the BIOS chip...luckily.
