From the research that I have done it looks like these are the absolute best computer speakers that money can buy right now:

http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16836116142

Only problem seems to be that they crap out on people just after the manufacturers warranty expires, otherwise they're fantastic. I figure I could solve this problem by purchasing a 3 year extended warranty giving me a total of 4 years of coverage... and I can keep sending them in until I get a pair that doesn't crap out.

They seem to be out of stock absolutely everywhere though, so I'm looking for possible alternatives...

Logitech Z5500's are typically ranked higher than the Creatives. And they're on sale for $220 at dell right now

I'll second the Logitech Z-5500's. Best purchase I ever made and I've had them 2.5years so far. Drives my mom mad, but luckily I have no neighbours to contend with ! Muahaha....

If you don't want stuff that craps out, part your own system together.

they make good stuff. teh swan mkII were teh mutts nutts a few years back. way more than than what you see in BB or CC or the egg, but these are REAL speakers designed with audiophiles in mind.

as far as i know, for powered PC speakers these are the king of the hill.

Just Put together a Home Theater system, Use real speakers not satellites and your ears will thank you

I've got the 5500's for my dorm, they're not bad for computer speakers. The 5.1 set from Klipsch is much better, IMO, though they are notorious for blowing the amp easily.

Give the Klipsch ProMedia 2.1's a listen. BestBuy sometimes puts em cheap $99 - $129.

Same here, had them for a few years now and I couldn't be happier. For general use I have them turned up 1½-2 full notches. Anything over 1/4 on minimum volume shakes the walls, I absolutely love these speakers. They blow my friends' X530's away.

My older Klipsch 4.1 rev 2's were a lot of fun, but the M-Audio StudioPro4's from Compusa are much more accurate and clear. Now for surround I use an Onkyo HTIB HT-S790...much better than the Klipsch for only about $100 more. :)

If you want really good sound, you're going to want to look at something besides PC speakers. Most PC speakers use smaller satellites coupled with a subwoofer, which does some weird things with positioning and doesn't give you very good sound quality across the entire frequency spectrum. Like someone else said, your best bet is to put your own home theatre system together. Look at speakers from a manufacturer like B&W, or build your own. :)

Well let me say I've been a big CSW fan for a while now but the Cambridge SoundWorks Microworks II (http://www.cambridgesoundworks.com/store/category.cgi?category=mul_spk_csw&item=c1mic2tc) system really sounds great. For me its as good as 2.1 gets for a computer system (without putting together your own of course.) I thought the Klipsch ProMedia's sounded a little on the warm side but you can't really go wrong with either system.
