Before you read the irony is I was just going to do a backup tonight.
god dammit man, xp crashed again!. This time repair wouldn't work. Heres the summary, system running stable for a week now, and today turn it on and it wont boot. The error was c:\system32\config\system, file corrupt. Ran recov. con. and did chkdsk, fixed a few errors. Ok same thing, so went to repair, wouldn't see the installation! So went back to the consol and went to c:\system32\config and saw their was a system.sav. So I renamed that file to "system", it booted into a repair somehow. After the repair it booted to the logon screen but there was nothing there. OK, i did full repair from the cd, an hour later same thing. Went to RC and did fixmbr. Same thing. So i just reinstalled XP, but now im angry because my old profile is FKed up. The file is currupted. Damn XP, If NT4 only have usb and real directX id be so happy. I quess I should have accually learned XP before I made it my main OS. So now I have to reinstall everthing. The thing that really pi**es me off is that I just hooked up my 5gig scsi drive to backup my current sys.
Well, here what I want to know, what caused the error? Bad HDD? I know my motherboard has issues, but thats being replaced. The wierd thing is the fact that there was no users to login on my bad install. If what im typing doesn't make sence it's because its past 12:00 and i'm angry and tired, and I didnt look over what i typed.
Why don't you give Win 2K Pro a run. I like it much better then Win XP.

I had win2k pro and one day it wouldn't run on my sys, really I installed it about 3x in a row and it wouldn't boot within a week. Well, I'm getting my sys "together" after christmas, and I'll got to a multiboot with XP, 2k, and DOS. I'm replacing all my cheap hardware,
isa SB16- basic pci sound card (have)
broken ACORP mobo- an abit fcpga2 board (buying)
20 gig west dig that gets lots of errors- 10k cheetah (have)
my generic pc100 ram- samsung ECC (have)
So all my bad hardware will be replaced so I hope that 2k will be stable. Well, it will be because most of my errors were hardware related, and file system errors, which im pretty sure is from the hhd. So I'll report back in 2 weeks when I get my hardware, accually if I can't sleep tonight, I'll try installing 2k on my scsi drive just to see what happens. Ok, I'm out, wish me luck.

I mean I DID have it stable, until that error. Well if i can get the user accounts back on that installation, I'll just back it up and keep that XP.
Have you considered that both of Microsoft's most stable OS won't run on your equipment? I would think that either your hardware or your tweaks could be at fault.
Did you change anything before this happened?
Try a clean install...

Nothing changed. The only tweaks I had where just using 4-way interweaving and thats not really tweaking at all.

I bet your overclocking.
I have the same prob, 900 boots up no prob, 1200 boots up then resets or gives me same error as you get.
Either boost the cooling or downclock it a bit.

That is what i think it could be. I wasn't ocing, but I was running a gorb. My p4 sink i use wasn't finished being slightly modded to fit sock 370. Now that I finished, my clips that I had to mod to fit broke. But I replaced my gorb's fan with a slighly better one. I noticed my cpu's die isn't fully flat, and you can't really lap coppermines. I tried alittle anyway, well I'll have to buy a new cooler and see if im stable.
Oh yea, it also seems to be old hardware too, I can't run 2k unless I disable ACPI. When I have 5 devices on irq 11 my computer acts freaky.
I have to agree with Oreo. When I first got my rig running, first thing I did after installing windows me was o/c the cpu(AMD1.13mhz). When I went to install the drivers and other junk, my comp would just freeze up. And if they would install they did it with errors. Moral of the story is: O/C after you install your OS, Drivers and other important Software. :D
P.S. Don't forget to Scan and Defrag your HD every month or so!

well, the thing was my cpu wasn't OCed. According to the cpu database, the gorb can handle an OC on my exact chip. I figured that the gorb could then handle my cpu not OCed. I guessed wrong. In the database the chip is the exact same chip as mine, and even said to get from newegg, which is where I got mine. He said he used a gorb too.

It is a rare chip that will o'c' with a gorb...and you could get a chip that comes from the same wafer as a realy overclockable one and it could be a dud..case in point, a freind of mine bought a PIII 450 (katmai) I bought the same type (s spec/date/plant)from the same dealer at the same time and his will do 620mhz easy, and the furthest mine would do on his mobo or mine was 558 reliable, and about 598 squirely, and any higher and it just wouldn't boot at all.
No two proc's are the same, and I wouldn't use a gorb to kewl a K6 let alone a PIII/P4...sorry but that's how I feel.
I have a suggestion though...make sure you have a good power supply, and don't use too much thermal compound..a razor thin layer is all that is needed, and any more would be almost as bad as not having a heatsink at all.
I have had bad experiences with WD drives, and now use Maxtor drives only, and scsi (IMHO) is way too expencive for what you get, I'd rather go raid.
If your board is unstable, then the Abit just might cure your woes...the mobo CAN make all the difference.
BTW, I have ran win2k since it's debut and I don't like it...it's fast in games that it likes, but slow in most other areas, mostly because of the way it looks to see if you have permission to do the task you are trying, and my instalation keeps loosing the modem, dunno why.
I have been running 98se on the comp in my sig, and I never have to reboot, except when I shut down for adding a new device, or when installing new software, and I run it 24/7/365, and I rarely go to the windoze update site...I keep it mostly generic.
Good luck with your setup soon to be revamped, and happy holidays, and I hope santa brings you what you want

overclocking that is funny no I think its windows OS systems... I can run stable at 13X133 the xp 1500+ core is clocked to in windows runs stable when I put is to 140 it freeze in windows but linux runs perfect... I think windows with Xp is the worst for overclocking 2000Pro is better anything else just sucks unless its linux but if U ask me go to windows 2000 pro wait for lindows to come out for linux and go to that say good by to bill gates Microsoft windows OS all suck and aren't as stable at linux also how many backdoor are on Xp isn't even funny I think they do it on purpose just to get more money out of the costumer

What's funny about that?
I have XPpro. @1100 it gives similar errors on occasion. @900 it always works great.

Well I hate gorbs, but im broke and all I have is my p4 sink, my peliered slot1 sink, and the gorb. The clip broke on the P4 sink, and didn't want to setup all that thermal monitoring crap. So gorb has to last until i get Xmas money. My psu is a cheap one though. It's 300w but I looked at the amps and its not much or at all higher than my 250w. It was from comp-usa, I had a gift card and got that and the p4 sink. Damn comp-usa. Well I know about the razor thin layer, that was the first thing I read about back when I built my computer. So I'll get that ACII, a new sink, and hopefully a mobo. I hope I'm able to OC, not really fun unless you OC.

Just a catchy name for the thread. XP doesn't suck, its acorp and west dig that do the sucking here.

what is acorp and west dig?
can you clarify this ?
really don't know what the hell it means

ACORP is a cheap mobo company, I got a mobo from them and it has issues. Western digital, my hhd also is having issues, could be from the mobo though. My hdd keeps getting errors, hopefully low level format when I get a new mobo will help.

OK, understand.
know what kind of mobo will you get?
good luck

I'm not sure, pretty sure something from ABIT, with fsb 1MHz stepping and a seft menu. Any suggestions? Must be FCPGA2.

i only use IWILL, Tyan, and Intel. Asus will be next
i never use ABIT;therefore, i don't want to recommend you anything from ABIT.
you only want Celeron ?
northwood is comming. Can you wait for this baby?
i see you oc 1gh celeron to 1.3. Can't you go higher than this or you are satisfied with it?
i don't really mind to push my CPU to the max with stability. Thing nowsday is so cheap.............i upgrade my computer every 7 months
but whatever your choice is, GOOD LUCK
and don't forget to tell us how your new system is ok?

The thing is my brother gave me 2 512 sticks of ECC sdram, and I just bought the celeron. I really need a board so a FCPGA2 seems logical. I can stick a tualatin in there in the future, the northwood would be kinda be overkill for me anyway.
