hello,

I have a question for ya guys, i just installed a XP 1900+ in my asus a7m266 board with a thermaltake volcano 6cu fan. in a custom case by cooler guys(wind tunnel , something or other)

and the ipanel tell me the cpu temps range from 51C -55C and MB temps from 28C - 35C. all the fans are running at the proper rpm. Is this normal for this speed grade?

if not what do ya suggest i do?

thanks

Definitely not. You're running much hotter than you should be with that heatsink. Two things to check. Is the heatsink sitting correctly on the die. Sometimes one side of it can sit on the socket so that its not making full contact with the die. This is most likely what is happening with you. Second things is, what kind of thermal paste did you use to mate the heatsink with the cpu core?

BTW, welcome to the forums.

okies,

I reseated the heatsink... after inspection of the bottom the cpu was in the center of the thermal pad on the copper core, so thats good.

So I scraped the thermal pad off and used the thermal patse my local store gave me, free(I dunno what kind, no label on the small tube).

the temps still havent changed(BTW im not OCing).. still 52C cpu temp and 30C MB temp.

Make sure you have proper airflow in your case, and replace your thermal paste with arctic silver. also clean the heatsink and CPU with high percentage alcohol and lap the heatsink. By lapping i mean sanding it with starter 500grit, than 800grit, then 1000grit, than 1500grit, than possible 2000grit. Use 2000grit on your CPU.

Well, here's and update:

By putting a little more paste on the die and removing the shim... plus rearraging some wires to give the6 fans some room to breathe i've gotten the normal working load temp to 49C and MB temp to 28-29C.

Should I still aim for lower... i mean what is a "safe" operating temp? Considering all AMD would tell me is the max die temp is 95C. But that won't help me.... *sigh*

I think I might scrap the thermaltake and get some arctic silver and a swiftech.

BTW my Mobo is a Asus A7M266 w bios 1005.. the XP/MP patch.

Thanks for the advice :)

that mobo is none to read high temps some times up to 10c higher thin what its supposed to be

I wouldnt worry about it unless its unstable

You shouldn't put too much of the paste on the die. It might heat up your cpu more. The point of that stuff is to fill up the little space between the die and hs. Beside you get that stuff all over the place, take the hs off and you'll see what I mean. You should really lap that hs like the other guy said. It should take a couple of degrees off.

You didn't give an ambient temp so there is really nothing we can realistically tell you besides the fact that you can operate at that temp and yes it can get better. Those are Tbird temps. XP should run cooler. If you do decide to go Swiftech take a look at the revised version of the MCX370. Named the MCXC370 it now has a 1/2" thick C110 copper base and according to tests done by our Tech guys is second only to th MC462. Price is $48.00 at Swiftech website. It also has a nifty new clamping system that holds the HSF to the die with an exact pressure using all three tabs on each side of the socket.
