Reduce the number of opponents to about 4. Build cities as fast as possible (have one of your cities produce nothing but settler units). make sure that your borders are secure by not leaving large gaps between your cities.
If you do then the AI opponents will put cities in them.

Playing on the standard size map seems to be easier than the large or huge, especialy with fewer opponents.

Read the current PC Gamer, they have a small strategy guide for Civ 3.

That game is junk. (If you dont want to waste time learning it, then waste more time playing it).

civ3 is amazing. the learning curve isn't that bad, if you played civ and civ2 (and were able to figure them out). i played my first game on warlord, figured it out, and moved on to emperor, so i guess its not too bad (i get whooped royally on deity though:D)

I just bought it Haven't installed it, yet, though, because I'm probably gonna have ta put all-new drivers in, and everything.
Been usin the 4.32 4-in-1's, and the 12.41's...seems like every time I put DirectX 8 in here, it screws my puter up
I'm usin a p-o-s h-p monitor, it might be part of the prob. Saw a pretty Daewoo 17-inch for $139, but I couldn't afford even that
Anyhoo, wish me luck...

I'm getting whooped too....I put it down to the second to last difficulty setting and I'm slowly improving too. I agree with the previous post too, it seems similar to civ2, where you want to get as many cities right in the beginning as possible and set them on land squares that produce 2 foods, so u have an automatic head start. In civ2, I often put cities on hills to increase defense bonuses, but seems to me in civ3, u need the growth right away.

my 2 cents.
