I have been considering upgrade my system recently and just wanted some advice. Currently im running an AMD Athlon 64 x2 4200+ with 2 gigs of ddr 400 ram (pc3200) and an Nvidia 7950 gx2.

Im considering upgrading with the new Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 and 2 gigs of new ddr2 800 ram. For the video card I was debating between the 8800gts and the hd2900, leaning in favor of the Nvidia card.

I run most games at 1920x1200 resolution with graphics as high as i can handle and its been getting more and more sluggish on my current system with time. I want to be able to run at that resolution with settings maxed or near maxed. Unfortunately, i havent been able to find a good comparison of my 7950 and the newer video cards so I'm not sure what type of performance increase i can expect to see.

If anyone could give some advice on the chosen hardware setup and if it is even worth upgrading for me, that would be great.

Well I'd def go with an eVGA 8800 of some type with 768MB on it...or get 2 of them in SLI. :)

I'm kinda puzzled why they have some odd sizes in this series and why not just go 256, 512, 1GB, but oh well.

As for the other stuff I can't say I'm not an Intel person I try to avoid them.lol

a E6850 is on the G0 stepping. It will overclock like a mother !@#$$%er. Prolly easily hit 3.6-4ghz. It prolly won't hold a 8800GTX back much at 4ghz.

If money is the issue, and your choice is either the 8800GTS 640mb or the HD 2900XT, it depends on the price you can get them for. The 2900XT is faster than the 8800GTS 640mb, and as newer drivers keep getting released, i'm sure it still got more juice to put out. However, usually the 8800GTS is cheaper and therefore, is the better deal.
