I have a 10gig Quantum HDD its UDMA 66 but I'm not sure if its 5,4k or 7.2k RPM but it whines very loudly I want to try and make something that will quiet it down a little, with house hold items... Is this possible?

Make a foam box that will fit tightly around the HD. Make sure NONE of the hard drive shows and only the cables get out of the box. Then mount the foam box somewhere in your computer. Don't let any metal touch the HD. The foam will absorb the sound. Also Very Important: Make sure the HD doesn't overheat! If it gets real hot make vents.

If it still gets hot::mad:
Take off the box and find out a way to mount the HD w/o the HD touching the case.

That is all I can think of.
I take no responsibility if your HD overheats and is destroyed.

Here's how to do it: line the bottom of the case with crate foam, then cut two strip of foam, and invert them so they "lock" together. Rest the HDD on top obviously. The air will flow above and under the HDD, and it will be floating on about 2.5" of foam.

Or you could always get an IBM Deskstar with ceramic bearings that will be completely inaudible on random seek even from few inches away ;)

try out (ibm owners only) one of ibm tools lets u gonfigure udma drive loudness and cache it pretty gets u where u need so u put it lowdest when the test (the test is inside the program ) runs and u hear in instant how lowd is ur drive set.duno if other manufactres have done same thing though.

Hey guys, I just did what LJ5L posted in the pic above!
It made a huge difference! My HDD now runs much more quiet, and AFAIK, doesn't get hot cause it has a 80mm fan blowing on its side & on PCI + AGP cards + mobo. It now makes a nice sound when reading/writing. Thanks!
I now have only one question: How can I scure the HDD to the foam??? I have to be too gentle and too caucious when moving comp. How can I fix the HDD?

Hmm, well i guess you could glue the foam strips to the big foam piece and then somehow attach the hdd to the strips, but even then it would not hold a hdd in place if the computer became non vertical.

If you just have the problem with the hdd sliding off the strips, then maybe try gluing a thin layer of good rubber, something with a lot of friction on top of the strip, and the hdd should stay in place well with the help of gravity.

Be creative ;)
