Hey all,
I want to be able to run upcoming games like: Bioshock, Stranglehold, Crysis, Unreal Tournament 3 etc on pretty much max settings for my 22 inch widescreen monitor (1680x1050). Here are my system specs:
-WinXP Pro SP2
-2GB Corsair XMS ddr400 (Cas 2) memory
-Asus A8N-E S939 Mobo (single pci-e x16 slot)
-AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800 cpu
-EVGA nVidia 7800gt
-Antec Tru Power 2 500 watt PSU
I was eyeing the 8800 GTX cards to purchase (and prolly overclock), but I am unsure if this will get the job done with the afore mentioned games for the settings I want...unless I am mistaken. Please help me decide which card to get in order to do what i want to do or if I would be better off waiting until the next gen card is released. I am a loyal nVidia fan, so please no ATI suggestions. Thanks.

You might not even need a GTX for those resolutions, it's really quite boarderline... right on the point of switching from a GTS 640Mb to a GTX. I also have a 22" monitor and decided to go with a GTX just for good measure, and of course, have a sli board for future upgrading. But as you can see, I was able to overclock my video card to a decent point without physically modifying it in anyways. Even though evga DOES allow third party heatsinks... But meh, no need for it, my C2D 6400's the bottleneck, not my 8800GTX.

I think an 8800gtx should be more than enough.

Even if a single GTX somehow isn't enough, what are you alternatives? If you want a single card, the GTX is the post powerful card you can get.

I just want to make sure that it will be able to run the next gen games for awhile if i pull the trigger. I will be building a completely new computer about a year from now...

Just a Note:
Yes an 8800GTX would be the best.
The only thing is.. your CPU will most likely be a bottleneck.

the 4800 dual core? really? ****...i dont want to touch anything but a video card on my system until i build a new one a year or two from now...tight budget...

yer that 4800 is a bottle neck after i put my 8800gtx in and ran 3dmark 2006 i was getting 8930score overclocked the cpu by a few hundred mhz and got 10263score. cant remember how much i was overclocked by just managed to find a old notepad doc with the settings i was trying.

Crap...is the GTX still worth it for me to get then? I dont care about benchmarking, just the games i listed above...

I suggest you wait until the games actually come out. They may turn out to be like Quake 4 and Medal of Honor Pacific Assualt - glitch as hell and dead multiplayer. By then you can build your self a whole new setup with a new 9800 or 8900 w/e NV is putting out by Christmas you'll be set for those type of games for sure.

I will not be able to afford a whole new system for at least 1-2yrs...so where does this leave me? My comp specs are still pretty decent...

upgrade to the 8800GTX and oc the living !@#$ out of your cpu. At 3ghz it should be OKAY. (not great, but it'll be ok.)

Nah, Just get a GTS the 640MB version, save your self alotta money and you'll have more than enough power for those newer games.

Not to be a stickler but the 8800 Ultra is quite a bit faster than the GTX...
For you though I would go GTS 640. In a year or so you can get that same card for half the price witch will allow you to buy a SLI motherboard also (and a q6600 G0). :)
Suprised that nobody caught this:
You will need vista to run DX10 games

And it will take M$ up to a year to release DX10 compatable with WinXP..knowing them..
They better or I wil start making fun of Steve Balmer.

Not from what I've read...I'd say it is a little better than a GTX...

MS will likely do no such thing. they are trying to make money, bottom line. why would they add support for dx10 to XP when its one of the major selling points(at least to the kinda people that game) for their brand spanking new Vista? It's not economically sound for them.........
my guess is, games are gonna be both dx9 and 10 compatible for a while, but when dx10 only titles roll out you'll have to get vista to play them.
Or they just wont sell alot of games..... Developers have quite alot of pull, and MS removed the only reason DX10 couldnt be backported, so its completely possible. Many people not only don't want to buy a new OS, they have tried and do not like Vista.

its not that much faster and is not worth the price since you can just oc the gtx yourself.

Yeah. Your CPU will definately be a bottleneck. Mine was til I gave it an extra three or four hundred megahertz (over 3ghz). See you can DO THAT with Intel processors. Just wake up one morning and go "I need another 600mhz today..." then just dial it in.
Never been a better time to buy than now...

For the price of a GTX you could get a GTS 640 and a 64 x2 5600+. That will solve your bottleneck and give you a very decent GPU till you want to do a big upgrade in a year or so. Exactly how well it will perform on Crysis etc? Just have to wait and see. But I'd bet it'll be pretty good.
Edit: you might want to OC both too ;)

hes running socket 939, so i dont think a 5600 is even an option(at least not without a new mobo and ram, and if thats the case you might as well jump to intel).
OP: id say settle with a GTS 640 for now. or, do a few tests and see how fast you can OC your cpu. if you can reach 3ghz then maybe a GTX would be worth it.

The Ultra is the fastest card.
