making a lead!!

i have got a wee lead here with the rj4 type connectors on -
i know this will sound daft as its a cheapo idea (but aint that part of a OC'ers life?)
Can i just cut my wee cable and put the required length of phone wire (the kind for modem to wall socket) line and that saves buying 50 metre @ £1.00 per meter:eek:
