I've been over the Ubuntu forums, but they're pretty much a mess in my eyes, so I hope no-one minds if I post a question here.

Are AMD chipsets still a no-no for Ubuntu Server? I was planning on buying an 690V based MSI board and an low spec X2 for kicks, but if I have to battle all week long for drivers, I'll opt for Inel...

Or have things changed? 2-3 years ago AMD and Linux was a pain, but now? I have no clue :-)

Aren't AMD chipsets basically ATI chipsets, or based off them? I wouldn't be surprised if they used the same drivers. Seeing as the old ATI chipsets (in laptops) worked, these might too.

I know the Nvidia chipsets work for sure.

I had a dually amd Biostar board that hated *buntu.

I threw Linux Mint Bianca on it and it worked perfectly.

Try it out. It's based on Debian as well and you should be able to load the same pachakes (for the most part) as you would with *buntu.

I use a Feisty Fawn setup now on my Samba box, but I like to play around with my Linux Mint install enough to keep a workstation installed with it :)

I'd be really surprised if there were a hole that big in the linux kernel. Maybe a chipset here and there with bugs, but to say all amd chipsets? No way. Gentoo AMD64 support has been stable and operational for years now.

Its actually based on Ubuntu, specifically. But it works as a great alternative if Ubuntu doesn't like something.

Older AMD chipsets work great in Ubuntu, usually. But alot of modern ones don't work as well or work slow.
