SNES FTW. Got one for my 8th birthday in 1991 and it's still going strong. I still have around 40 games for it and they all still work including the original controllers. And, as stated above, no load times, no scratched discs, and no worries of warranty repairs! Also, the best games ever. Street Fighter II, Super Mario RPG, Super Mario World and about 150 other of the best games ever.

When Starfox first came out I scat bricks from pure happy of its gameplay. I had the rumble back pack hooked up. Basicly it is a subwoofer that you wore on your back. good times... good times

I'd say SNES probably.

The NES was good, but the SNES was definitely better. A Link to the Past, Super Metroid (SO DAMN HARD), SMW was alright, but SMB 3 was my favorite Mario game of all time (Luckily the SNES had it in Mario All-Stars). Star-Fox, F-Zero, Killer Instinct... Just a great great console overall.

Dreamcast. I don't even need a SECOND to think about it.

No other console has EVER brought as much to the table as the Dreamcast. It would be three LOOOOOOONG years after the Dreamcast launch before Sony and MS were able to get their sh** together as far as online gaming goes. The DC had a modem built into it. You could use the DC to surf the internet (something you STILL can't do on the PS2 and Xbox) from day ONE. The game library consisted of some of the greatest hits of all time including (but not limited to) the birth of the 2k sports series.

2D Fighting games were the rule of the day. Crazy Taxi? Jet Set Radio? Almost every title released for the system was innovative in some way.

No... The Dreamcast's since of style has never been replicated or outmatched.

Umm, probably...umm...Why do you make me choose? Can I say three? SNES, PS1 and DC. I like the SNES, cause not only was it the first console I played but it had a couple of good games (friend had a snes, would always **** him off cause I was over at his house every day playing double dragons). Same for the PS1, first one I owned and some half decent games (big fan of the Army Men series for PCs, kinda carried over to the Playstation version). And Dreamcast, because like Rainless said, easy to set up for online play and I liked the VMUs (I always wondered why that isnt more popular. I liked being able to see what games were on what VMU without plugging all that I had into the system, about 3 or 4. But I guess with most of the new systems coming out with hdds the memory card is fading into the background.)

I'ld have to say NES. I can't think of any system, including my pc that gave me that much gaming enjoyment. Maybe I'm just getting nostalgic in my middle age.

I will say though, there was nothing quite like hitting the bars for the night and then heading to a buddy's house with a group of friends and playing Goldeneye on the N64 while drinking til the sun came up. Ah, good times.

And that would be for one game, and one game only.

http://www.consoleclassix.com/info_img/Super_Metroid_SNES_ScreenShot1.jpg

As what one might call a "Metroid geek", this game is infallible. This game will, in my eyes, never be properly surpassed. It had just the right difficulty(Hard, but not too hard), graphics that suited, a story that was great, but never got in the way, and the "all alone" atmosphere of the game. I never, ever tire of this game. I'm not one of those that refuse to acknowledge Metroid Fusion and the Prime series. And if you haven't played Metroid II for the Game Boy, and you have a trip coming up, buy it, you will not be dissapointed.

Of course, one game definately doesn't cut it, so I'll name my other favorites:

StarFox!
Super Mario World 1 & 2
Chrono Trigger
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Donkey kong Country
Street Fighter 2
Super Mario Kart
Pilotwings
Final Fantasy III
F-ZeroSadly, I don't own many of these games (My parents sold most of their old consoles, including a Genesis and a Commodore 64! Damn them!) I managed to save the NES though. I recently purchased (few weeks ago) a used but clean SNES, and 2 original controllers.
I don't own the game though. Nobody does, apparently it's rare nowadays, Zelda, SFII and SMW2 included. I did get StarFox, SMW1, Pilotwings, and F-Zero, though...so I'm happy.

For now.

I would have to go with this statement the DC brought the ideas that are in todays next gen consoles. Online gaming (XBOX), internet (PS3 & Wii) but the DC's game catalog was great loads of choice and the graphics where superb shame about the support for it as it wasn't what it should of been.

My fav game on it was Marvel Vs. Capcom the BEST conversion from the arcade correction a perfect conversion with awsome graphics. Infact I was looking on Amazon.co.uk for 1 cause I dam well miss my DC.

I'll bet most people here are too young to remember the ColecoVision. The huge black console (later grey was available) with the controller holders built into it, the 5lb power adapter. The expansion port for the Atari 2600 and Intellivision adapters not to mention the STEERING WHEEL AND PEDALS perfect for Turbo, Pole Position and Dukes of Hazzard, true arcade quality graphics. I had several games that used the number pad. Squish Em' Sam was one of the best because I think it was the FIRST home game that TALKED!!!

Damn, I dunno....I'm going to have to hook it up and play it again. Forget close second. I'm now saying tie between DreamCast and ColecoVision.

Some of the old Odessey units had a voice thing for games. I don't know if it was an adapter or built into the unit though or how much it was used. I remeber making the voice boxes on old Apple computers say stuff at school. Those things sounded like a smoker using one of those things you hold to your neck to talk, lol.

I assume you are talking about the (by todays standards) big controllers that you held in one hand vertically, had a colored trigger under each finger, a thumb roller on top along with a number pad and a joy stick for the other hand? :D I had those...my dad got them when I was little.

The mystery of the number pads... Depended on the game. Certain games had a "template" that snapped in over top the number pad buttons. They identified the functions. The best example was with the baseball and football games. (These games were unbelievable for their time...and I have yet to ever play a game that required as much complex hand-eye coordination as the football game.) In those games, the number pads would call out plays and such to tell your team what to do when they weren't being directly controlled.

Each colored trigger corresponded to a player on the field wearing the same color shirt...so, when triggers were depressed, then the joystick would control those players. A really good football player could run their receivers on all sorts of routes by alternating triggers and sending them different directions down the field...throw to a guy open deep, then it's a frantic thumb wheel spinning competition to see who can run faster. :D

Anyway...my vote is SNES and nothing else has yet to come close. So many great games... Earthbound, Secret of Mana, Inindo, Romance of the Three Kingdoms III, Zelda: A Link to the Past, Final Fantasy II and III, Techmo Super Bowl...and on and on.

You're thinking of the Intellivision, John. They had similar controllers. The Coleco had no thumb wheel, just a round stubby joystick. They were sort of similar but the Intellivison had graphics more like the 2600 while the ColecoVision had graphics closer to the NES.

Super NES, N64, and the Sega Saturn.

Super NES - SO many good games, excellent titles that I grew up with, a damn near perfect controller, and a solidly-built console that saw support for years. Also, had one of the greatest game libraries ever. There wasn't much wrong about the Super NES.

N64 - the N64 IMO had the best 3D of its generation, and I think the games as a whole were just more fun. PS1 never really appealed to me.

Sega Saturn - one of the first consoles (if not the first) to offer online play (limited) and web browsing, it had a terrific controller, and some of the best imported games to ever come out of Japan. The Saturn may very well be the best 2D console ever created. 3D was not so good, but the PS1's 3D sucked too, N64 was king in 3D during this time IMO. Some of the 3D titles on the Saturn are very memorable in spite of their crummy graphics, such as Sega Rally and VF:Kids. Nights into Dreams was a classic!

The Dreamcast had some excellent titles, but its controller was too big of a turn off for me. I liked how it followed the design of the Saturn 3D controller, but having the cord feed out of the bottom was a big no-no to me - completely incorrect spot for the cord.

For old consoles, the Atari 2600/7800 and the SMS were all I remember having in my younger youth. NES was better at the time so I didn't care about old and outdated-tech Atari, but I can't place NES as my favorite console because the early versions of the consoles were of a sh***y build quality.

Falcon-K

N64 - 4 player games were just so much fun, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, mario kart 64, star fox, WWF/WCW games plus single player gems like Zelda OoT.

It was Coleco, but they were optional controllers that were extra money. I don't think we had any games that used those controllers except for football and baseball. The other games all used the round stubby joystick. :) The big controllers had the round stubby joystick, too, but all that other junk as well. Heh...we had that donkey kong game, too...sure does look familiar. Buck Rogers was another interesting one. We had a couple Smurfs games, too... :attn:

Yeah, the baseball game along with that controller was incredibly advanced for its time. The sports games were very pure and good replications of how the actual games work. Later games on NES and SNES and such had much simpler input (and generally easier to play) and often only began to replicate the same levels of fun by bringing in real teams and players or by having imaginary franchise building like Baseball All-Stars.

The input scheme and the controller what really made the game and made up for the primitive AI of the time. It made things that are generally pretty mundane now like base running into something really exciting thanks to the direct interactivity. Squeeze triggers to control different base runners, then spin the thumb wheel to make them run...faster spinning = faster running. You could initiate a hit and run by squeezing all triggers, spinning the wheel as the pitch was released, swing at the ball, then start spinning like crazy. :D Pickles were really fun because you'd spin the wheel opposite directions to change direction. The wheel also was used to pitch velocity....fast balls, change ups... It was really meant to be played against other humans and would get really competitive.

Baseball as a game was just simple enough to be fairly easy to play and do well after getting the hang of using the controller. Football has lots of freedom of movement with lots of players simultaneously...much, much harder to get good at. With poor players scores would generally be very low because they'd be too inept to execute plays on offense...but, with good players scores would likely get very high because it's tough to react to everything that can be done on offense. The best thing on defense was to predict the other players pet plays that they use over and over and try to disrupt them...hopefully come up with a couple stops and not be so predictable on offense yourself. :)

The worst thing about the games was that they were tough to learn compared to modern stuff... You could watch a couple good players go at it and it looked amazing. Then, try it yourself and have a hard time even doing the simplest things...like...finally manage to hit the ball in baseball, then your baserunner just stands there like a moron at home plate because you forgot to spin your wheel. :D

Ah Fudge, that brings back memories. I got a ColecoVision for Xmas one year. We always opened our gifts on Xmas eve so I spent ALL night playing ColecoVision till I fell asleep in front of the TV....anyways I digress.

The games I had did not utilize the number pad IIRC. I had DK, DK Jr, Lady Bug, and Space Fury (with that cheesy one eyed alien that talked in bleeps and bloops @ the beginning and end, he he). I am sure I had more games but just can't remember them. No sports games I know that much. Ah well, thanks for the memories.

So when i had mine when younger it was used purely used for games its what most people just used it for, at the time it was the best gaming platform well at least in my eyes.

Snes, lots of great games. I remember the echo's in Mario World, it blew me away, Castlevania 4 was one of my all time favs.

N64, loved Mario and Zelda in 3D.

Dreamcast, great system, but Sega had already lost their fans due to earlier mishaps like Sega CD, etc.

I jumped on the Dreamcast bandwagon a lil late, bought it when it was $99 but I loved every minute of owning one. My friends loved it too they even went to the store and snagged their own system, for $99 that system was incredible!!! Not to mention it didnt need a modchip ;)

N64 - 4 player games were just so much fun, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, mario kart 64, star fox, WWF/WCW games plus single player gems like Zelda OoT.

All excellent titles right there, even with the multiplayer sluggishness Perfect Dark still kicked butt. NBA Hang Time, WWF No Mercy, and Duke Nukem: Zero Hour were other awesome titles. I've kept my N64 all of these years just for those games alone.

Dreamcast FTW! I remember playing hours of Phantasy Star Online with my buddy in highschool. He got me into the Dreamcast, Crazy Taxi, RE:CV, Skies of Arcadia, Power Stone 2, Shenmue 1 and 2!! Man I went back a month ago and started playing my Dreamcast again, it was in my closet in a box for over a year after my move!

Call me crazy but my favorite console was the origional sega 32 bit system, my friends all owned them and I had an snes and was so addicted to the Sonic the hedgehog series (sonic was way cooler then mario anyway lol). All I ever wanted was a genesis but I was denied.. maybe that's why I wanted it so bad back then lol.

ok yea.. turtles in time was an excellent game, I'm still kinda ticked Xbox live arcade didn't publish that game in place of the 89 arcade game.

SNES for sure
Pretty much the 1st system to be emulated on newer gen systems
