I hear a lot of people talking about g0 stepping but I have no idea what it means. So, what does it mean, also what does it do and how much does it cost?

Here you go guys:
Stepping is a designation used by Intel and AMD to identify how much the design of a microprocessor has advanced from the original design. The stepping is identified by a combination of a letter and a number.
Typically, the first version of a microprocessor comes out with stepping A0. As design improvements occur, later versions are identified by changes in the letter and number. Changes in the number (for example, A3) indicate minor design changes, whilst changes to both the letter and number are made following more extensive changes (for example, B2). Stepping allows consumers and servicers to identify a microprocessor's version.
Basically it is just a revision code, the higher the "numbers" the better it usually is ;)
The g0 stepping does not cost more AFAIK, but it puts out less heat, enabling us to push it harder.

Is there any reason behind going with the letter "g"? iirc the last stepping was a "b2" I think, why wouldn't they just go with c? lol Do they just pick letters at random.

Who knows how many revisions they made after B3, but only G0 made into production.
Or they just pick a random letter.

It is a marketing thing, see it works, look at how many people are wondering about it....;)

yeah....its just a diff version of the cpu...less heat output from what i remember.

Does anyone know if the new shipment of Q6600 at newegg is G0 stepping or when did people start receiving these chips, thanks.

Nobody knows that unless they pre-sort them, which they don't, also it is too early for the G0 CPU to be available, so I'm 99% sure the stock Newegg has are all B3's. Tankguys are the only ones that offer pre-selected G0 ones afaik...

It's a mystical stepping...CPU's of this revision can do your laundry, wash your dishes and walk your dog. Rumor has it the retail box includes a complimentary kitchen sink as well...

OK, fair enough...what I should have said is it is too early to expect a guarenteed G0 when you order it from places like newegg or other online retailers who do not sort them...sorry my bad

puts out less heat? is that really the case though? what's confusing about that statement is that the thermal spec on the G0 is 71°C and the B3 is 62.2°C
To me that means that it can tolerate (not lower) the higher heat that OCing creates.
i'm no engineer, so can someone explain what's going on in laymans terms?

The G0 stepping CPU's has a lower TDP (Thermal design power), so it means it dissapates less heat than the B3 stepping chips at max power usage, the thermal spec is something different, that is the max recommended operating temp
Another way of explaining it is: That's how much power the processor will dissipate and defines the cooling necessary to keep the processor from throttling.

i gotcha now.. thanks. so, its the thermal design power of 95W vs 105W that yields lower heat.
i'm comparing specs at processorfinder.intel.com (http://processorfinder.intel.com/List.aspx?ProcFam=2774&sSpec=&OrdCode=) but actually because i'm trying to determine how to distinguish the G0 from B3 on the retail boxes :D
