View Full Version : For the love of god...clean your HS!
This has probably been posted before but thought I would share it again.
I just got bored and noticed my Tbird 1.4GHz I have overclocked to 1.66GHz on my 8K7A+ was reaching 53C under load as of this moment. It's barely warm in here and used to get better temps. Now, I don't like taking the heatsinks off of my TBirds very much as fragile as they are but I took this one off to replace the CoolingFlow thermal compound that was on there with some ol' faithful AS II. Decided to take the fan off the heat sink as well to clean it off a bit.
Wow! There was like a sheet of dust and fuzz nearly completely blocking all airflow between my HO Delta fan and the SK6 I use on this TBird.
Blew it all out and cleaned it best I could and then carefully cleaned off all the CoolingFlow with alcohol and a swab then reapplied the ASII. Put it all back together and just booted into Windows and cranked SETI back up...it's been going a good 15-20 minutes now and my temps have gone from 53.2C to 44.9C according to Hardware Sensors Monitor Pro. All from cleaning my heatsink.
So, if you've had yours running for quite some time and haven't touched it...might want to check and make sure yours is clean too. Might be in for a nice surprise!

Air Filters work wonders too.
I have found that an old softner sheet for the drier works well for filtering and has a less restrictive area for good air flow. :D
But, yes. Keep your HS&F clean !!!!!!!!!
Tooth brush (the wifes-lol) pipe cleaners, can'd air. what ever it takes. :burn:
Great advice Jon.

just a sugestion for you dudes... while having the comp open, and your tools next to you, you should add some filtering to your intake fan, and always try to have positive pressure in the case, so you will get less dust...
Btw: You should periodicaly check your intake filter, just cleen them and replace them... (you might notice a litte increase in temp, cuz the flow of air is reduced a little bit by the filter..)

Good tip.
I need to get into my systems and clean out all the
dog hair from ALL the various fans again soon.
Pet owners should probably check this more often since
the hairs get in the HS's and fans, and tend to collect
even more dust.

but I can't really do that with a damn sk6. stupid design. the clips are a nuisance. everything else about it is good. I can't even get a grille on it!!!

Yeah, it's not a fairy tale it actually happens, a friend of mine forgot to clean his heatsink.... it got a furry blanket to keep it nice and warm..... and he smoked his Thunderbird 800. Collected enough dust to do that in just a year from new.

That is a strange coincidence. I cleaned mine this morning. I do have filters, but there was still some "fuzz" in there. My drive racks were the worst.

yea i tried to put an 80 on my sk6 instead of this loud delta, it didnt work well as the 80 wasnt pushing enough air, i did find a ton of dust in the sk6 though , cleaned that puppy out

My air goes through a intricate de-dusting process before entering the case.
1. AIr goes through 400CFM fan (360mm)
2. Air passes through distilled water
3. Air passes through dryrite
4. Air passes through furnace filter
5. Air passes through dehumidifier
6. Air passes through fridge
7. Air is routed to several intake fans.
Now I really care about my dust. I make SURE that it doesnt reach ANY components.

I posted this about a month or so ago , if you dont wont to remove your HSF ,buy some compressed air and put the straw down in the HS and you will see the dust fly ,it had not rained here in like 3 months ,well it rained just enough to up the humidity .I then noticed my temps within 3-4 days shot up to about 55C ,they have never been that high ,I decided it needed a cleaning and when I took my PC apart I just about ....!
I guess all the humidity condensed on my HSF ,it had almost totally stopped it up.I blew it out and my temps are now at max 46-47 and 42 Idle. The dust is one heck of an insulator.

Here's a tip on preventive matenance: don't use a fan!!! Free-floating dust accumulates much slower than dust forced on the HS...

welcome to the forums , but could you imagine how fast the 125 watts coming off my processor would fry it without a fan ,I would say 3 min tops and my processor would be history....

Why dont you just filter your case intake?

I just got done cleaning the HSF on a stock PII 300. This thing came out of a Sony VAIO. As I opened the case, which weighs about 40lbs and built like a tank (not kidding), I couldn't even see what color the cards or mobo was. I had to take this oversized dustball outside and take a 5hp blower to it, which didn't help. They only way to really clean it was to throw the case away and use a damp cloth.
