Yes it is the best OS to date. Believe me, I tried them all. It is rock stable, excellent user interface, and I love the driver database it has. When I installed Winxp from scratch, all my drivers (NIC card, SBLive, Graphics card, Printer Driver, Scanner Driver, etc.) were allready installed and loaded. YES, it is expensive. YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!!! Everybody wants something for nothing!!! You want a fantastik Operating System, you have to pay for it.

To bad XP doesn't have working drivers for my radeon VE, and my scsi card.

Ive tried it and can't justify it. It has nothing to offer me or any of my co workers, therefore we will continue to use 98 until MS comes up with something better. XP looks to be a good OS for a new computer owner and/or user. Anyone else who has experience with coputers and other OS's will not see anything to make it worth upgrading.

You have to be kidding, right? Win 98 is not a reliable or stable O.S..How many BSOD's have you had since first installing? Too many to count, I bet. The features of XP, in my eyes are a bonus, but my main reason for going with XP is the stability. I have used Win98 since it came out, and trust me I do know what I am talking about.

if you think winXP offers enough reason to upgrade then you must be easily amused with pretty colors and nice little rounded menus. If you think win98 is an unstable OS then you obviously have not ever used one that was installed and configured correctly. I have been using win98 since before it came out, my boss is a beta-tester for Microsoft and I have used win95 for 3 years prior to that and I have used every MS OS ever produced and I do know what I am talking about. When a system is built correctly and the OS is installed correctly there aren't any errors. Unfortunately too many people think they know what they are doing even though MS did not intend for them to install it. We tried for 2 weeks to get a dual processor workstation to work with XP, and we were un-successful, the OS is so badly written that it corrupted files while trying to boot the first time. We gave up on that, we also could not determine enough reason (new options or capabilities that it offers to warrant upgrading over 100 computers and purchasing all the licenses. In an economy where money is tight, WinXP does is not a good financial decision.

Well since win98 has been out for waaay longer than XP, of coarse MS has fixed most of the bugs. As with any software, the longer consumers have a product, the more updates a distributor can release. But i still have to give a hand to MS for there new OS. As it finally has resolved some of the most innoying problems, as abb1 was saying. :D

I am a massive Linux fan and even I think that XP Pro is fantastic. Not quite as good as linux, but IMHO a lot better than 98SE

I am in love withe GUI- mmm...silver - I have NEVER had a crash and my 3D Games seem better. The only thing it didn't do properly was sort out my modem, but I'll do that this weekend.

I am a windows 2000 user just wondering if xp is just a jazzed up GUI on 2000 or a good upgrade? also believe it or not I am actually considering going back to 98se win 2000 has my vid card, nic card, sound blaster, and USB all on IRQ 11 and I cant change the IRQ settings and it locks when I game. 98 let me manually change settings but is not nearly as stable so it is a trade off. any one have any suggestions on the IRQ prob? I've done everything moved the cards reserved irq's disabled comports nothing seems to work

Yes, WinXP has a pretty GUI, but i dont care about that kinda stuff. I got a genuine improvement in 3D performance and stability. It hasn't even crashed once. There are a lot of improved features such as the fact that it is built on a genuine 32 bit platform. Win98 was based on a 16 bit, and that 16 bit was based on an 8bit (dos). My .02 is, if you got the extra hundred bucks, go for it. You will see a dramatic improvement in everything, not just the "pretty colors and rounded menus".

check your bios to see if you can force IRQ settings.

Most Boards allow forced IRQ's, but you can change them in XP, well at least I have!

I turned off that feature, now my XP looks like 2k. It was cool at first, but then it got annoying

My eXPerience (excuse the bad pun) with XP has been nothing less than stellar. One of the things I like most of all is that you can put a box together, plop the cd in the drive, boot up, and leave it to install on its own. When you come back, it has pretty decent drivers installed for everything in there, and it has the network up and running...only problem is that it starts bugging you for an activation number... I bought an academic version from the u. bookstore, and found that the key was not valid...called up msft, and they said that someone had stolen the key. ...and I thought ripping the halflife box open to get that cd key was annoying :-/

My Soundblaster Audigy does not work properly with Windows XP. I had to go back to WinME and it works fine with it. When XP gets their bugs worked out , I will try it again. Also, not all games work with XP.

i have not had any trouble with progs not runnig under xp. if you already have win 2k i would say that there is no great advantage to upgrading, but i really think 98 users could use the xtra stability + features of xp.

I agree also, as it benefits Win9x users but not people already running Windows 2000.

Found one problem - my friends tv card is only 95\98 compatible. Not 2k or XP.

Well I dont like the activation but other then that its a great OS ,trust me I had a petition about boycotting it because of the activation.I have ran everything since win 3.1 ,this is the best hands down. The stability is unreal ,I ran my PC for 29 days straight without a reboot ,the only reason it got restarted when it did was the power went off.I also only have to install 1 count them 1 driver on my PC ,well since I got my gf3 its 2 ,the sound and the video card ,my other things work fine and its always nice to set up a system and not have to use 10 different deivers disk.
If you are gonna get it ,unless you have two processors get the home edition ,there is no difference in the two at all.

Tomorrow I will be buying the Full Version of XP and have a ?. Can you put the whole computer together or do you have to do like you do in Windows 98S.E. and put in the card then install then shut down then add another card then install.

Element-Xero

I never had to put in cards one by one in 98se....

I dunno why you would do that:eh?:

But yeah, definately put together the whole comp.

Thats what I was told to do. That way you can tell if theres a prolem with something instead of having to take everything out to pin point the problem.

If you still have some ancient games that were originally designed for Win 95, XP may or may not run them correctly,

Risk by Hasbro for example...

Everything else I have tried has run fine. Perhaps you can chalk this one to Hasbro's less than stellar software division...

Hmmm. As a counterpoint to that, I was never able to get the original scorched earth to run on my 98 machine, but once I upgraded to XP, it ran without a hitch. Interesting, no?

I'm all for XP, though I don't like microsloth as a company. But what can I say? If they put out a good product, you might as well use it!

Some people recommend that you only start out with the video card installed and then add other cards one at a time so that if there is a problem it is easier to narrow down the cause of the problem. As long as you know that all the hardware components are XP compatible just put the system together and do a clean install of XP. Then go do all the windows updates before you start installing your applications. You should have no problems.

I left everything in ,the only reason you would wanna do them 1 at a time especially in XP is if you were haveing problems, you can put the windows XP disk in while booted into windows and it will tell you if anything will or will not work ,but most can be fixed with only new driver downloads.

What the... why in the WORLD would you even consider WinME?? I would used Win95 original version way before I would even consider that horrible excuse for an OS called WinME. Thats IMHO, I personally use WinXP Pro and love every bit of it.

I just booted up the cd with all my hardware installed, and then just let it sit for half an hour came, back, finished up the install, and ran windows update. The default drivers where stable for me until I updated some of them.
