As most of you know, I am working on a project Folder that will be submerged. I would like to use a CF adapter as my HD so that I do not have to have any external drives sitting around. My question is, how much room is really needed to run F@H on Linux? I would like to be able to use a 16GB card or smaller, but do have the option to run 2 16GB cards as one.

Is this for SMP or non-SMP folding? For non-SMP a 4 GB card will be enough, although for SMP folding I'm not sure. I've had little luck trying to install a x64 distro onto a memory card and kind of gave up. For non-SMP folding I think Pen Drive Linux (http://www.pendrivelinux.com/) or Damn Small Linux (http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/) should work well.

for SMP linux you need only 75mb's. I've never had a WU thats over 40mbs. I say 75 for SMP itself, as it gives you room for slightly bigger work units.
DSL is only 150mb by itself..
Well, there is that "No WU over 5MB" option :santa2: So maybe a 512MB for the non SMP. I had a mini-itx box with DSL (Damn Small Linux) and the regular F@H client. No problems on my 512MB flash drive. And I am pretty sure DSL is 50 MB unless they made a new version.

Thanks guys. It looks like I could easily get away with an 8Gb card with lots of room to spare. I was really not wanting to pay almost $150 for the 16gb version.
I am not sure what your building, but if its a dedicated folder you don't need a HD at all.
I run one of my rigs off the Ubuntu CD.

Would be nice, but I am not going to have a CD drive either. I'm trying to keep everything in the tank, and will be using a wireless kb&m.

I'm a madman, I know this already. Welcome to the discussion Ned :D
BTW, there have been some changes to the plan due to an injury...due to my stupidity. Check the Project Log for info. This should end up looking pretty cool, though the production is going to hurt a bit. I am going to be rebuilding my main rig with the C2Q though so I'll still be getting the numbers I was looking for from it.
Ubuntu 7.04 and FAH SMP, are running on a 8 GB virtual drive on my HTPC. I havent run out of space.....yet. The SMP work folder tends to get a bit cluttered and probably reaches 50 MB at peak.
Non SMP, bonus WUs have been known to hit 30 MB. Regular WUs vary from under 50KB to 4.99 MB.

So, you are going to submerge a computer? Obviously.
What the heck?!?!? How do you do this?
Spray it with ScotchGard?????????? :D:D:D:D:D

Lots of duct tape & a long water hose.

Do it like that water massage thing I saw at the mall.
My concerns now with your project are:
1) A cell phone tester, uses maybe 100X less power than a computer might. I would hesitate to say that "a cell phone works immersed, so a computer should too", analogy.
Since the computer is plugged into power that is well over 1000X more than a cell phone has, I'd be sure to have the whole thing plugged into a good plug in strip with a 15A breaker built into it (most have this). Having a breaker right there, is WAY better than relying on a breaker 50 ft. away of higher amperage.
Make sure there's a working smoke detector right over the tank!
2) Recommend all aluminum capacitors, like some of the Gigabyte boards have, over the standard type. Not up to date on the specifics, but all metal sounds much better than metal and a sealer, which may dissolve in the mineral oil (who knows).
3) The tank. I'd be concerned that the sealer used to assemble it and make it water-proof, would deteriorate by exposure long-time to mineral oil. The warmer the oil, the faster the deterioration should be. I'd call the manufacturer of the tank sealant, see what they say. If you don't know, talk to A manufacturer of aquarium sealants, and see what they say.
Then test it outside for a long time! :D
Good luck, that's very unique and ambitious. Be safe!
